Full Length Sizing vs. Neck Sizing

Full length sizing dies such as the Lee Pacesetter Dies, return the entire spent cartridge to a degree that will chamber in any rifle for that caliber. Lee Dies size cases as minimally as possible while still ensuring proper chambering so that your brass is not "overworked" by the die. It is necessary to lubricate the case prior to full length sizing.

We recommend full length sizing when shooting fired brass for the first time in any rifle. It is also the preferred technique for rifles intended to be used for hunting so that rough handling of the ammunition through the magazine and chambering does not become a factor for error.

Neck sizing with Lee's Collet Dies generally provides increased accuracy because the spent cartridge becomes "fire formed" to your specific chamber. No case lube is necessary because the die is only pressing the neck against the mandrel in the middle of the die. Neck sizing is only preferable when reloading cases that have been fired out of your rifle. They are primarily designed for accuracy when using a bolt action rifle for target use. Collet neck sizing results in cases lasting up to ten times longer without the need for trimming near as often, as when full length sizing.

The Dead Length Bullet Seater that comes with Lee's neck sizing dies is designed for accuracy and does not crimp the case as does the seater/crimper in our Pacesetter dies. It is designed to touch the shellholder to eliminate clearance in the press for a more uniform bullet seating depth. Crimping is seldom necessary for target work.

The Deluxe Rifle Die Set includes Lee's Neck Sizing kit along with a full length sizing die. This is because you may obtain brass that has not been fired in your rifle and it allows you to prepare the case for its first firing in your rifle. Remember, it is necessary to lubricate the case for the full length sizing die only. After your first firing only the collet sizing die is required.

Pacesetter die set

Includes a full length sizing die, bullet seating die, factory crimp die, shell holder, powder dipper and load data.
This set is recommended for assembling ammunition for hunting purposes as the finished rounds chamber easily and can withstand rough handling of the firearm action.

Limited Production Pacesetter die set

Fluxing Your Lead Alloy

You have added the lead alloy into your melting pot and while it was melting down you prepared the mold for casting as demonstrated in this "VIDEO" ( provided by Lee Precision, Inc. ) There is one last and very important step left that must be performed before you can cast bullets. The lead alloy must be fluxed.

You will see a gray scum floating on the top of the melt. This is mostly your costly alloys and not waste. When you melt the lead these alloys ball up into tiny spheres that float to the top. They do not join in with the lead because of surface tension between the molecules. Flux defeats this barrier and allows the metals to alloy. There are many fluxes available but most are very corrosive to steel and will badly rust your melter. Bees wax or "Lee NRA Formula Alox Bees Wax" works very well as a flux and is not corrosive.

Roll the flux into a ball about 1/4" ( large pea size ) in diameter and drop it into the melting pot. Stir it in with your lead ladle. The smoke can be burned off with a match. This can create a large flame so care should be taken. When the pot of alloy is fluxed properly there should be nothing but a dark grey powder floating on top. Skim this off and discard it. This waste can cause lead poisoning so you should not let it accumulate.

With your melt properly fluxed you are now ready to cast bullets.

The Load Master Indexing Adjustment

There are two common causes for the Load Master to not index correctly. The easiest to check is the case ejector. This is a chrome plated part just under the black knurled nut that holds down the shell plate. There is a "tail" on the case ejector that prevents the shell plate from turning clockwise as the indexer is pulled out of the shell plate carrier. Make sure the end of this tail is bent down so that it drops into the holes in the top of the shell plate (if it doesn't, bend it with a needle nose pliers). It is important that when placed onto the square fitting on the carrier, that the case ejector not be able to move at all in a rotary manner. If it does, this would allow the shell plate to move in a clockwise manner which will cause index problems.

The other is carrier misalignment. Sometimes a difficult index causes the whole shell plate carrier to rotate on the end of the ram, rather than just the shell plate. This pulls the indexer away from the ramps cast into the frame that normally operate the indexer. The fix is outlined on the last page of the instructions, under "Alignment of the Carrier to the Turret". Basically what you are doing is loosening the carrier on the ram so that you can turn it clockwise (looking down from the top of the press) a degree or so, to bring the indexer closer to the frame.

While the directions contain more detail, loosen the draw bolt on the bottom of the ram of the press until the carrier is loose. Raise the ram to a point that the round portion of the flipper on the end of the index rod is against the protruded rib on the frame of the press. Ensure that the index rod is in towards the carrier as far as it will go.

From the front facing the press, pull slightly on the case feed ramp so that the round part of the flipper on the index rod is flush with protruding rib on the press frame. Holding the carrier in place, re-tighten the draw bolt to about twelve pounds of pressure. This means using about twelve pounds of pressure at the end of the handle of a one foot socket wrench or about twenty five pounds with a six inch socket wrench. It is important to hold the carrier tightly in place while tightening the draw bolt, if not done, the carrier will move counter-clockwise under the torque of tightening the draw bolt.

INSIGHT OF THE MONTH:

Load Master Priming Problems

To get a loadmaster working properly, there are a few things to consider that are inherent to the design of the press.

1. Each die in each set needs to be set properly so that the work is completed at the very top of the stroke. This is more necessary with a Loadmaster than a Dillon because the Loadmaster primes on the upstroke and it is an adjustable setting. Consider that if you set a die too deeply to prevent the carrier from reaching the top, and then set the primer seating depth to properly seat primers with this die set, everything works fine. Then, you switch calibers and the next die set allows the carrier to go further up – then your previously set primer system is now setting too deeply. All of the symptoms will show up – tilted primers, smashed primers, broken primer system parts, etc. In conclusion, all die sets should allow the carrier to go the top and have the work done at that location. If this is done, the primer system has to be set once and that’s it.

2. If the primer adjustment is set too deeply, what happens is that the primer slider has to try and place a primer up and on an already rising post. This results in damaged parts and mounds of frustration with the above symptoms. This is how to set it properly, but after doing so, operation has to be done in conjunction with #1. With no turret in the press, put a fired case (with spent primer in it) into station one and advance it to station #2. Be sure the primer seating depth bolt (on the left side of the press) is turned as high as it will go. When the carrier is at the top with the fired case in station #2, hold the handle down to keep the carrier at the top. With your left hand, push the primer rocker arm (the lever that the depth bolt pushes) down as far as it will go. This puts the priming plunger up tight against the bottom of the case. Turn the primer depth bolt down to meet this location (until it stops), lower the carrier and turn the bolt down further not quite a half turn more and secure it. Along with #1, you have just solved the priming problems that many complain about.

3. Primer problems on the Load-Master is usually caused by the primer pin sticking up a small amount. To fix this problem you must determine what is causing the pin to not completely retract.

To solve these issues, start by removing the primer trough, looking into the carrier you will find a hexagon hole, on one of the corners of the hex there is a shelf to prevent the primer pin from dropping down too far. This shelf can become fouled with dirt, gunpowder, or case cleaning media. Clean this shelf of any foreign material.

Now carefully inspect the primer pin for any nicks or burrs. A small nick on the large diameter of the pin will cause it to stick up and cause primer tipping. Lubricate the large diameter of the primer pin with a very light film of oil and return it to the primer feed well. Be sure the small spring is installed and intact.

Remove the trough cover and carefully inspect the hole where the primer passes through. Remove any burrs on this hole with a sharp razor knife. Feel free to enlarge the hole to remove any burr. The hole does not provide guidance for the primer, but any burr will cause a potential tipped primer. Carefully inspect the primer slider for any nicks, burrs or flash and be certain you have the correct slider for the primer size (small or large).

Reinstall the trough cover and apply a very small drop of oil to the black primer lever pivot. Now reinstall the primer trough. Cycle the primer rocker and be sure the primer pin retracts completely.

Now is a good time to check the primer seating depth bolt for proper adjustment. Remove the turret and run the press to the top of the stroke. Push down on the primer rocker arm. If you are unable to push the rocker arm down a small amount you likely have the primer depth bolt set down too far. Many times, this is the result of incorrectly set dies at some point. If a sizing die is set further than to just touch the shell holder, the carrier cannot go all the way to the top. This can make the user believe that the primer seating depth is now incorrect and not deep enough. When the deeper adjustment is made to the primer depth, the priming pin rises prematurely. This causes the primer slider to have to push the primer up and on the pin instead of simply sliding it on. This setting results in tipped primers and destroyed primer sliders. More damage can occur when the carrier can once again go to the top because the offending die has been readjusted or a different and properly adjusted die set installed. The deeper primer adjustment is now putting far too much pressure on the primer rocker arm and a destroyed carrier will result.

One last helpful change is to place your sizing die in position 2 with its decapper removed. Put a decapping die in position one. This will align case perfectly to accept the primer.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA!!

Celebrate and Reflect on the fact that we are the "last bastion of freedom on earth". For this reason we must not focus on our differences, but rather, join together and preserve the USA as our founders designed it. Our freedoms are not free and will be lost if good people do nothing to uphold it. Teach our youth about the country we grew up in. This is no longer a part of schools curriculums, having been replaced by diversity. Our kids know very little about the freedoms we take for granted. We must ALL teach them.

Summer has finally arrived in Wisconsin. Robin and I (mostly Robin!) have the yard back under control and the strawberry patch is goin' strong. All is GOOD. Check out Robin's creation "Gorski Park".


And look what showed up in our front yard again this year. The "Titan Scooters", Blue and Ruby. Now, that's summer!!

The best part of this last month was the morning of Fathers Day. Our son Michael got home from California where he has been serving with the 3/7 USMC. His Active Service has ended and he's home to join the Titan Team. Oh how he's grown! OOHRAH! United States Marine Corps. Our plan has been to add "consumables" to our product line and our sons Michael and Jeff are going to bring this about. Watch for this addition in a few months and any suggestions as to what you use would help us stock your needs.

We have been getting some product reviews on the website. THANK YOU! I know it takes a little time but it helps others a lot.

Liquid Alox Application

Best results in applying liquid alox are when the alox is heated before applying, or thinned with paint thinner. This makes it flow more easily, and results in a more even coat. One technique is to boil water and pour it into a coffee mug, and then drop the bottle of liquid alox into the mug for about five minutes.

Place your freshly cast bullets into something about the size of a Cool Whip bowl and drop a few drops of liquid Alox on the bullets. Mix the bullets around until they are all coated. Lay the freshly coated bullets on some wax paper to dry. Liquid alox will usually dry enough overnight to reload the next day, depending upon the humidity. Tacky bullets can be dusted with powdered graphite.

If you subscribe to the "more is better" line of thought, your coated bullets may never dry. Don't go for a "golden" color but rather just a light varnish. If you discover that your bullets are sticky the next day, you can get by with using a little less the next time. Keep reducing until the "stickiness" is gone by the next day.

If you are sizing your cast bullets, it is necessary to lube them first. Because the sizer will remove some of the surface of a larger diameter bullet, you may need to re-lubricate the bullets after they have been sized.

Many of our bullets are of the "TL" or Tumble Lube design. These bullets have many shallow grooves that are perfect for allowing Liquid Alox to adhere to a great amount of surface. It has been reported that the accuracy of these bullets is high.

The Auto Disk Powder Measure and The Perfect Powder Measure

The Auto Disk powder measure is primarily designed for reloading pistol cartridges, but it can also be used for reloading small rifle calibers with the addition of the Double Disk Kit and Rifle Charging Die.

The Perfect powder measure is at its best when reloading rifle cases, but it will also work for pistol. Many prefer the Auto Disk for most reloading, unless reloading a small quantity of rifle cartridges, for which they want to try a variety of charges. The Perfect powder measure is easier to change the quantity of powder to be thrown, the Auto Disk is better for mass production.

NEW IN 2011:

NEW LEE AUTO-PRIME XR LARGE & SMALL PRIMERS

The original Lee Auto-Prime automatic hand held priming tool was patented and introduced in 1979 has been improved. Ask any old hand the best way to prime and guaranteed, Auto Prime will be the first words from their lips. The Auto-Prime had just one limitation, only certain brands of primers can be used because some brands could chain fire if used improperly.

Anyone buying primers today knows finding your favorite brand of primer can be difficult if not impossible. If you have been loading for a few years you also know that the packaging has become larger. The new Auto-Prime XR eliminates the primer brand restriction so any brand primer is now usable.

The new Auto-Prime XR features a patent pending elevator pin. This pin safely separates a single primer from the others and presents it for priming reducing the likelihood of a chain fire. The new tool also has a new unbreakable comfort curve lever and large and small primer trays with slide on covers that comfortably accepts all brands of primer boxes.

Note:

The Auto Prime body has to be opened up slightly on the top rim for large diameter Magnum cases to fit. This generally applies to the new short magnums. This can be done with a hand grinder or rat-tail file. If you are unable to perform this modification at home, you can return to the factory and we will modify it for $4.00.

Requires Auto Prime Shellholders (sold separately). Lee Auto Prime Shellholders have a different base than "Auto Prime 2 and press" shellholders which will not fit this priming tool.

Shellholders are not included with this Auto Prime XR.

INSIGHT OF THE MONTH:

Interchangeable Dies

Frequently, dies from one caliber may be used to load other calibers. Due to the locations of crimping shoulders, the operation may only work for dies of the shorter caliber to the longer. You may notice a label depicting the shorter die in your set for the longer version of the cartridge, Lee does this to reduce costs.

As an example, to load .357 Magnum cartridges with .38 dies, the Sizing Die (1st die) setting stays the same as the .38. The Powder Through Expanding Die (2nd die) and the Bullet Seating Die (3rd die) must be backed out approximately 2 turns in the turret. This is the difference in length from the .38 to the .357 Magnum. This setting must be tweeked in as 2 turn is approximate.

Even though some dies are interchangable, in many cases, different shellholders are necessary. You can see a complete list of shellholders under "Case Preparation" then "Shellholders and Calibers".

**Lee dies allow the use of .308 bullets in the 32 H&R Magnum. The other bullet diameter commonly used is .311 and that is the expander that comes with the set. To use .308 bullets, it is necessary to purchase an additional expander and turn it down to .308. This can be done using a drill press and emery cloth or if you buy the additional expander from the factory, Lee will do it for $10.00.

NEW IN 2011:

NEW LOAD MASTER PRIMER FEED SYSTEM

There was a design change on the Load Master primer feeder in August 2011. This change eliminates nuisance damage to the sliders and trough cover during operation. The primer feed system is now sold as an assembly along with the primer slider, primer lever, screw and o-ring. These parts are no longer available individually.

SMALL PRIMER FEED SYSTEM-90381

 This system replaces Lee parts LM3254, LM3253A, LM3253B and LM3251 for use with small primers.

LARGE PRIMER FEED SYSTEM-90383

This system replaces Lee parts LM3252, LM3247A, LM3247B and LM3251 for use with large primers.

Pro 1000 Priming Problems

The trick to the Pro-1000 priming system is to learn to develop a "feel" through the press lever. By now you can probably tell when a primer seats correctly and when one doesn't. If it doesn't feel like a primer seated correctly, STOP and pull the case out! You don't want to run a case without a primer up into the powder through expander die, because it will drop a powder charge into the case (with a hole in the bottom) and powder will leak out into the primer feed, causing problems until you clean out the spilled powder.  When operating the Pro-1000, learn to slow down as you swing the lever up to the top of its stroke. As you swing the lever up, the shellplate rotates 1/3 turn, the case trips the case sensor allowing a primer to slide onto the primer pin, and at the very end of the stroke the primer pin pushes the primer into the case. If you swing the lever too hurriedly, all this happens too quickly and you will frequently get tipped primers (because the case and/or primer are not in line). Slow down a little and when you hear the "click" as the shellplate snaps into position, hesitate for just a second, and then follow through with a firm push on the press lever (primer seating depth is dependent on a firm push on the press lever). This slight hesitation allows time for the primer to slide on top of the pin, and the case to come to rest over the primer pin before being pushed up into the primer pocket. With practice you will be able to feel through the press lever what it feels like when a primer starts into the case correctly, and when it doesn't, and will be able to take corrective steps before you get incorrectly primed cases. Often just backing up slightly (push the lever back down just a little) and then taking another swing will correct the problem and the primer will seat correctly.

World Series Game 6, WOW! Truly unforgettable!! Okay, no more excuses, time to get the yard ready for winter and prepare for DEER HUNTING.

Load Master Primer Feed Update:

Lee discovered the need for a slight revision to the new primer feed design for the Load Master. This new system was introduced this August. Lee contracted me at my day job to revise the tooling that produces the parts. I shipped the revised tool back to the molder on Monday the 24th. On Friday the 28th I learned that the revised versions were being assembled and tested. On Monday the 31st Lee released the new revised primer systems into circulation. I have already heard great things from a few of our customers that received early warranty shipmets of this revised version. When Lee redesigned the old system they eliminated the issue of crushed sliders when the operator does not follow the press cycles closely. The sliders were designed to be the weakest link in the system to prevent damage to other more costly functions of the press when the operator does not finish a press cycle and then starts a new one. The old sliders did their job perfectly however users complained about having to replace these sliders when the press handle was not pulled all the way down and pushed all the way back to the top to reset all the mechanisms to the start position. The new design eliminates all this but it created another small problem that did not show up in Lee's testing. It was an easy fix once we were aware of the problem. Watch for 90381 and 90383 in our "Service Parts" category, these will be the revised version.

Custom Full Length Sizing Die Sets

Lee Precision works hard to supply reloaders with everything they need to reload ammo successfully. If you shoot one of the many great calibers in the world that are rare, you know how hard it can be to find the supplies needed to support it. It would not pay to mass produce dies for these caliber however Lee does offer custom services on many of their product lines. The following are the terms for Custom Full Length Sizing Dies.

Full Length 2 Die Set for Rifle calibers include a Full Length Sizing Die and a Bullet Seating/Crimping Die. The charge for the Full Length 2 Die set would be $177.00 ($130.00 setup + $42.00 dies + $5.00 S/H) for each die set.
*For cartridges up to .555 base diameter or 2.850" case length.
