Liquid Alox Application

Best results in applying liquid alox are when the alox is heated before applying, or thinned with paint thinner. This makes it flow more easily, and results in a more even coat. One technique is to boil water and pour it into a coffee mug, and then drop the bottle of liquid alox into the mug for about five minutes.

Place your freshly cast bullets into something about the size of a Cool Whip bowl and drop a few drops of liquid Alox on the bullets. Mix the bullets around until they are all coated. Lay the freshly coated bullets on some wax paper to dry. Liquid alox will usually dry enough overnight to reload the next day, depending upon the humidity. Tacky bullets can be dusted with powdered graphite.

If you subscribe to the "more is better" line of thought, your coated bullets may never dry. Don't go for a "golden" color but rather just a light varnish. If you discover that your bullets are sticky the next day, you can get by with using a little less the next time. Keep reducing until the "stickiness" is gone by the next day.

If you are sizing your cast bullets, it is necessary to lube them first. Because the sizer will remove some of the surface of a larger diameter bullet, you may need to re-lubricate the bullets after they have been sized.

Many of our bullets are of the "TL" or Tumble Lube design. These bullets have many shallow grooves that are perfect for allowing Liquid Alox to adhere to a great amount of surface. It has been reported that the accuracy of these bullets is high.

INSIGHT OF THE MONTH:

The difference between the commercial .223 Remington and the military 5.56×45 NATO cartridges has been the topic of conversation a lot lately. These are the facts on this issue. The following diagrams (found on the Wikipedia website) are of the .223 REM and the 5.56 NATO rounds. In studying the actual dimensions you will see that they are exactly the same. The only difference in the rounds themselves is that the 5.56 NATO is loaded to higher pressures and velocities than the .223 Remington.

Military 5.56×45 NATO

The higher pressures and velocities of the 5.56 NATO is made possible by the real difference between these two calibers. The following diagram (found on AR15.com) shows the rifle chambers of both the 5.56 NATO and the .223 Rem rifles. Note that the 5.56 NATO has slightly more headspace (.226" dia./.073") and a longer leade or throat (.164") as compared to .223 Rem at (.224" dia./.040") headspace and (.045") leade. The longer 5.56 leade decreases the included angle to .0427 degrees compared to 3 deg 10' 40" on the .223 in the transition down to the .219" bore diameter. The longer leade and headspace allows for the hotter loads in the 5.56 NATO. You can fire .223 Rem cartridges in a rifle chambered for 5.56 NATO but you should NOT fire 5.56 NATO cartridges in a rifle chambered for .223 Rem. There may be high pressure signs on the primers and brass, cycling problems and extraction failures when 5.56 NATO rounds are fired in a .223 Rem rifle.

The .223 Rem is slightly more accurate and a better choice for benchrest shooters, competition match shooters or varmint hunters. The 5.56 NATO is better for those who want to target shoot with surplus military ammo or use the rifle as a self defense weapon. The .223 Rem die sets are used to reload both 5.56 NATO and .223 REM because the external dimensions of the actual rounds are the same.

Cast Bullet Leading

A clue to what is causing the leading is where the leading first begins to appear. If it appears near the chamber, chances are that bullet diameter or hardness are the cause. A diameter too small and/or too hard an alloy will allow high pressure gas to leak past the bullet, which erodes the bullet and leaves leading near the chamber.

If the leading first appears on the leading edge of the rifling (if you imagine the bullet being pushed through the barrel, you will note that one edge of the rifling does most of the work of imparting a spin to the bullet. This is the edge you see when you look through the barrel from the breech end) the bullet might be too soft, and/or the velocity too high. A good rule of thumb for maximum velocities when using Liquid Alox is 1400 feet per second for plain base bullets and 2200 feet per second when using gas check bullets. Bore conditions will require you increase or decrease this velocity slightly to prevent leading.

If the leading appears in the second half of the barrel, the bullet is running out of lube. You should see a star shaped pattern of lube accumulate on the muzzle. This is an indication that there is a little excess lube.

Our hearts and prayers are with the people affected by the recent outbreak of tornadoes. We had watches here last night and as our wall clouds passed through I thought of all the people who’s worst fears came true. I am always amazed and so very proud of the indomitable spirit displayed in times like this. The sounds of chainsaws and front end loaders were heard the very next morning as people started to dig out of the mess left behind. The residents of these communities and also the many volunteers from across the country will rebuild and move on from this disaster, one day at a time.

Robin and I have added a new ‘Notify’ system to our website. When items are out of stock you can now enter your email address and be notified when the items are back in stock. Please keep in mind that this does not reserve these items for you, only back ordering with us will reserve items.

The once fired brass is starting to come in again and we will have a good supply this year. Besides our good friend Bill Applegate, who has provided all of our brass thus far, we now have two new sources that will help us maintain a steady supply. Watch the website for some new caliber offerings as our new sources can provide cases for calibers that the police departments do not shoot. We will cover as many calibers as possible but all the details are not known as yet.

Which Lee Reloading Press should I get?

This is by far the most commonly asked question with regard to the Lee Precision line of reloading presses. The answer is dependent on the type of reloading you intend to do, be it rifle cartridges, pistol cartridges or both and the amount of ammo you need to reload.

There are three basic styles of press. These are the Single Station Press, the Turret Press and the Progressive Press in their order of efficiency.

With a single station press you perform the reloading steps in batches as shown in our “Reloading Made Easy” article. It is a slower method but produces the same quality reloads as any other method. With this press you can reload 40-60 rounds an hour.

The next in the line of efficiency is the Turret Press where 3 or 4 dies (depending on the model) rotate above a single shell case in the ram of the press, hence, you must pull the press lever 3-4 times to get one complete round. The Value Turret Press is ideal for handgun loading and with experienced hands, you can load over 200 rounds per hour. For those who wish to use the press as a single station press or to reload rifle calibers with an overall length of more than 2.312″ long, the auto index feature can be disabled in seconds and then re-enabled in the same amount of time. The Classic Cast Turret Press is a larger version and allows you to reload rifle calibers of up to 3.060″ long before you must disengage the auto index feature.
 
The most efficient press to reload ammo is the Progressive style. Here you have 3 or 5 dies (depending on the model) stationary above 3 or 5 shell cases that rotate around under the dies. Every time you pull the press lever there are 3-5 operations happening at once, hence, you get one finished round with every one pull of the lever. Lee offers two fine progressive presses, the Pro 1000 and the Load Master. With a progressive type press you will reload 400+ rounds an hour.

The Pro 1000 is a 3 station progressive press primarily designed for pistol cartridges but also can load smaller rifle calibers like the .223 and .30 M-1. The overhead clearance is limited to 2.312″ overall cartridge length because anything longer will still be in the die when the carrier begins to rotate.

The Load Master is a 5 station progressive press that is designed to handle rifle and pistol cartridges with equal ease. It is stronger and has more overhead clearance to accommodate the larger rifle calibers.

Both progressive presses include auto indexing, automatic primer feed and case feed, and can be fitted with an automatic bullet feeder. Both can be purchased completely set up with everything you need to load your desired caliber. Those who want to load rifle or use the Lee Carbide Factory Crimp dies for handgun loading choose the Load Master.

Caliber changes for the Turret Press and the two Progressive Presses can be done in less than five minutes and there are extra turrets available so you don’t have to readjust your dies once they are set, simply change the turret.

Selecting The Right Die Set For Your Needs

For Rifle

Lee Pacesetter Dies and RGB series: Use these dies if you want to produce factory-dimensioned ammo that reliably fits and feeds in any gun. They are the first choice for semi-auto actions. Full-length sizing is a must if you are reloading for more than one firearm or reloading cases that were fired in others firearms. Most Pacesetter dies include the Lee Factory Crimp Die.

The Lee Collet Neck Sizing Dies: Use these dies for best accuracy, longest case life and no resizing lubricant. Only the neck of the case is resized the body is untouched so it retains the perfect fit to your guns chamber. Cases should have been fired in your firearm only and reloaded rounds are intended for use in just one firearm. These dies are the favorite of the bench rest crowd as there is no other die that can produce a more accurate cartridge.

If you intend to reload cases fired in others guns or you are reloading for more than one gun select the Deluxe Rifle Die Set. The Deluxe set includes a full length resizing die that allows you to restore any case to factory original dimensions so that you can fire form in your gun and then reload using the superior Collet neck sizing die.

For Handgun/Pistol

Most Lee Handgun Dies feature a Carbide Sizing Die. Carbide dies are simply the best way to resize straight walled handgun cartridges.

The Carbide Three Die Set works fine when using a quality controlled source of brass like cases fired only in your gun. More care is required when adjusting the bullet seat and crimp die as seating and crimping occur simultaneously.

Select the Carbide Deluxe Four Die Set when using mixed range brass or brass that was fired in others guns. The Deluxe Set includes the Carbide Factory Crimp Die. This die allows you to separate bullet seating from the crimping operation. It makes setup much easier and the die has the added feature of a carbide resizer that does a finishing sizing pass on the completed round. This final sizing guarantees that any case that passes through the die, will freely and reliably chamber in any gun.

                                   AUGUST 2013 NEWSLETTER

50th Anniversary Kit vs. Breech Lock Challenger Kit

The 50th Anniversary kit and Breech Lock Challenger Kit will work for both rifle and pistol cartridges. What differentiates these kits is the way you prime. The Anniversary kit is for those who prefer to prime on the press (typically customers reloading handgun cartridges since there is minimal case conditioning required). The Breech Lock Challenger press is for those who prefer to prime off the press using the Auto-Prime XR (typically customers reloading rifle cartridges since cases need to be trimmed).

These kits are designed to be a “Generic” kit, to which one adds the appropriate die set(s) for the cartridge(s) you plan to reload. Only Lee Dies include the shell holders (except RGB) that is necessary to use your dies on the press. It accommodates both the beginner and the experienced.

For rifle calibers, one should also add the appropriate case length gauge/shell holder to go with the case trimming tools included in the kit. Pistol cases seldom need to be trimmed as they generally wear out before actually needing it. We do make them however for those people who want the peace of mind.

Well, the Titan Crew did not do very well at the lake this year. We didn’t catch any keepers. The weather was bad but we suspect that the fish were monitoring our Facebook page and knew we were coming. Whatever the reason, there are plenty of fish left in the lake for next year.

HAPPY 110th BIRTHDAY to Harley-Davidson. The sound of rumblin’ motorcycles is everywhere around here. We are located in the Kettle Moraine, one of the most scenic areas in Wisconsin, and the bikers are taking in the sights. My Dyna is all shined up and pointed toward the Summer Fest Grounds in Milwaukee where there will be plenty of fun, chrome and Rock n Roll.

INSIGHT OF THE MONTH:

Bullet Weights Not Found In Manuals

If the bullet weight you wish to load is not found in your favorite manual, it is safe to use loads listed for a heavier weight bullet and find a load for the powder you have. Using that load with the lighter bullet simply reduces the pressure, and the velocity remains approximately the same.

Many times the powder manufacturer’s websites are good places to find load data. Refer to the following list of websites.

Well, Fall is officially here. The kids are back in school, the days are getting shorter and yes, the leaves are beginning to change colors. This can only mean one thing to many of us, hunting season is right around the corner. There is nothing like the sights and smells of the woods this time of year and the anticipation of our favorite game stepping out of the brush. Auto Disk Powder Leaking

The only powders that give the Auto Disk Powder Measure problems are Accurate #5, Hodgdon H-11 or Winchester 296. All three of these are very fine ball powders, and can get between the disk and the hopper. The fix is to order the Pro Auto Disk update it. 

If your measure is leaking with any other powders, it’s most likely because of excessive clearance between the hopper and the disk. As with all mechanical devices, enough clearance has to be built into the device to allow movement of the components. If you are experiencing leakage, one fix is to reduce the amount of clearance between the hopper and the disk by carefully sanding down the risers that the hopper is mounted to. Place a disk between the risers, with a piecce of scotch tape on top, and use a file or sandpaper attached to a flat surface, and file/sand until contact is made with the scotch tape.

Auto Disk Powder Leakage Fix

Remove Hopper and Disk to file or sand the tops of the 2 risers.

Put a layer of scotch tape on top of the disk and carefully file or sand the risers.
