Basic Rules for Hardening Lead

For every 1% additional tin, Brinell hardness increases 0.29

For every 1% additional antimony, Brinell hardness increases 0.92

Sample equation:

Brinell = 8.60 Brinell Pure Lead + (0.29 * Tin percentage) + (0.92 * Antimony percentage)

If you increase the amount of tin by 10% and the amount of antimony 5%, the brinell hardness of your lead will be 16.1

Brinell hardness 16.1 = 8.60 + (0.29 * 10) + (0.92 * 5)

Auto Disk Metering Consistency

When selecting a powder to use in a powder measure it is important to consider the shape of the particles called granules. All powder measures achieve their drop weight by filling a cavity or an adjustable vile having a quantifiable volume with powder. The physical shape of the granules are a part of the manufacturing process and due to their physical shape some granules will fill the powder measure more consistently than others. The following is a list of common powder granule shapes in the order of best to worst for metering in a powder measure.

BALL POWDER consists of spherical granules that are normally small in size. This type of powder meters very well.

FLATTENED BALL POWDER is very similar to ball powder but is flattened slightly. This type of powder behaves almost identically to ball powder.

EXTRUDED POWDER or Stick Powder has granules that are shaped like small extruded cylinders. One issue that can arise with this shape is the powder measure cutting the sticks into different lengths which will lead to slight inconsistency.

FLAKE POWDER has granules that are shaped like tiny disks. Flake powder is the most difficult to meter correctly due to the fact that it can “stack up” and/or “bridge” in the powder measure making it less uniform when metering.

Make sure that when measuring charges thrown by the Auto Disk measure, that it is done out of the normal loading sequence. It is important that the measure work consistently in the amount of force used to move the disk to the drop hole and return. This is accomplished through consistent press lever operation every time.

It is also very important to ensure that the Auto Disk measure is seated securely into the Powder Through Expanding Die which must also be properly adjusted. This information can be found on this FAQ under “Die Questions” and then “Powder Through Expander Adjustment”. If you are using a chain return system, it must be adjusted properly. This ensures that the disk moves the same amount each and every time the lever is operated. Proper adjustment of the bead chain can be found on this FAQ under “Powder Handling” and “Auto Disk Chain Attachment”.

You may want to “condition” the measure by either using powdered graphite on the disks or running the equivalent of a pound of powder through the measure. If you find that inconsistencies still exist, you may want to wash the disks in warm soapy water, rinse and let air dry. This should help eliminate any static that may have been present.

Lastly, some powders do not meter well. Unique powder is one example that meters with “casual uniformity”. You may find the same symptom with small flake powder in small quantities.

They call it “Cabin Fever”. I don’t know…..maybe I got it. This winter seems to be lasting a lifetime with months of below freezing temperatures and snow almost every other day. Enough already. I’ve been reloading all winter and I’m anxious to send them down range but it’s no fun when I can’t see the target past my own breath. This too will pass, it does every year, but man…..it won’t be soon enough for me.

My sons and I have been invited to give reloading seminars at this years Safari Club International Grand Banquet here in Oconomowoc, Wi. We are looking forward to sharing our knowledge of reloading with the hunters and shooters who will be attending. We are not known for our public speaking but we “know of what we speak” so all should go well.

Fluxing Your Lead Alloy

You have added the lead alloy into your melting pot and while it was melting down you prepared the mold for casting as demonstrated in this “VIDEO” ( provided by Lee Precision, Inc. ). There is one last and very important step left that must be performed before you can cast bullets. The lead alloy must be fluxed.

You will see a gray scum floating on the top of the melt. This is mostly your costly alloys and not waste. When you melt the lead these alloys ball up into tiny spheres that float to the top. They do not join in with the lead because of surface tension between the molecules. Flux defeats this barrier and allows the metals to alloy. There are many fluxes available but most are very corrosive to steel and will badly rust your melter. Bees wax   works very well as a flux and is not corrosive.

Roll the flux into a ball about 1/4″ ( large pea size ) in diameter and drop it into the melting pot. Stir it in with your lead ladle. The smoke can be burned off with a match. This can create a large flame so care should be taken. When the pot of alloy is fluxed properly there should be nothing but a dark grey powder floating on top. Skim this off and discard it. This waste can cause lead poisoning so you should not let it accumulate.

With your melt properly fluxed you are now ready to cast bullets.

Is it any wonder that the Harley-Davidson motorcycle was invented right here in Milwaukee Wisconsin? Yesterday was the first day since early December that the temperature was much above freezing and there were scooters out and about everywhere. I have to admit I was tempted to through the battery in the Hog myself as 55 degrees felt like summer. I decided to stick to my rule of waiting for a good rain to wash the salt off the roads first. Cartridge Overall Length (O.A.L.) Determined

The overall length (o.a.l.) listed on the drawing in Modern Reloading is the SAAMI (Small Arms Ammunition Manufacturers Institute) specification.  Most of the load data in the book was supplied to us by the powder manufactures. One can exceed the recommended maximum overall length as long as it doesn’t interfere with the function of the rifle.  If your rifle will not accept ammunition loaded to a longer o.a.l. choose a different bullet/powder combination.

There are many tools on the market to determine the “free bore” of your particular rifle.  This is the distance from the face of the bolt to the lands of the barrel.  A handy way to determine this without such equipment is to use a fine marking pencil and a cleaning rod.  Use something to make the internal portion of the threads of the cleaning rod blunt so that a tip of a bullet cannot go into the concave portion.  Even a piece of Duct tape will suffice temporarily.  With the bolt out of the gun and the bullet you intend to use placed and held up against the lands and grooves of the barrel, place your cleaning rod in from the muzzle until you feel it stop against the tip of the bullet.  Mark this spot on the cleaning rod from the muzzle end.  Remove the bullet and repeat the procedure with the bolt in and closed.  The distance between the two marks will be a close indicator of the maximum COL for that particular bullet.

Eliminating Load Master Priming Problems

To get a Load Master priming properly, there are a few things to consider that are inherent to the design of the press. I have listed 2 points below but first I need to stress the importance of a sturdy bench to mount your Load Master to. The press should not be able to flex and jiggle when you apply pressure to the handle at the top of the ram stroke. The priming system slides the primer on top of  the priming pin just before the top of the ram stroke and then at the top the priming pin is raised to push the primer into the pocket in the case. If the press jiggles at this crucial moment the primer can move slightly. If it moves far enough it will catch one side of the pocket and the primer will tip over. A sturdy bench is an absolute must. And now, on to the 2 main points of consideration regarding Load Master priming.

1. Each die in each set needs to be set properly so that the work is completed at the VERY TOP of the ram stroke. This is more necessary with a Load Master than a Dillon because the Load Master primes on the upstroke and it is an adjustable setting. If you set the sizing die too deeply and prevent the carrier from reaching the top, and then set the primer seating depth bolt to properly seat primers with this die setting, everything works fine. Then, you switch calibers and the next sizing die setting allows the carrier to go further up – then your previously set primer system is now set too deeply. This can lead to a broken Primer Rocker Arm and all of the other symptoms will show up – tilted primers, smashed primers, broken primer system parts, etc. In conclusion, all die sets should allow the carrier to go all the way to the top and have the work done at that location. If this is done, the primer system has to be set once and that’s it. The sizing die setup is the key to the Load Master. Raise the press ram to the top of the stroke and hold it there while you thread the sizing die in until it makes firm contact with the shell plate (no gap between the die and shell plate). Turn the die 1/8-1/4 turn more and finger tighten the sizing die lock ring against the turret at this setting.

2. If the primer adjustment is set too deeply, what happens is that the primer slider has to try and place a primer up and on an already rising post. This results in damaged parts and mounds of frustration with the above symptoms. This is how to set it properly, but after doing step #1 because this operation has to be done in conjunction with #1. With no turret in the press, put a fired case (with a spent primer in it) into station #1 and advance it to station #2. Be sure the primer seating depth bolt (on the upper left side of the press) is turned as high as it will go. When the carrier is at the top with the fired case in station #2, hold the handle down to keep the carrier at the top. With your left hand, push the primer rocker arm (the lever that the depth bolt pushes) down as far as it will go. This puts the priming plunger up tight against the bottom of the case. Turn the primer depth bolt down to meet this location (until it stops), lower the carrier and turn the bolt down further not quite a half turn more and secure it. Along with #1, you have just solved the priming problems that many complain about.

Robin, the Titan Crew and I are all doing well. Summer and all that goes with it is finally here and the only problem I can see is finding enough time to do everything as much as I’d like to. I have all summer to ‘get ‘er done’ so……ALL IS GOOD. I hope life is the same with you.

I’m an old dog and I have been around firearms and shooting my whole life. There aren’t too many times anymore when something comes along that makes me step back and open my eyes. This is definitely one of these things. Like very many of you I decided awhile ago that I needed to get a conceal carry license to protect myself and loved ones from the ever increasing threats in our world today. I now realize that this license and my time at the range are just the first small steps in my intended goal of self defense. Pro 1000 Priming Explained

The trick to the Pro-1000 priming system is to learn to develop a “feel” through the press lever. By now you can probably tell when a primer seats correctly and when one doesn’t. If it doesn’t feel like a primer seated correctly, STOP and pull the case out! You don’t want to run a case without a primer up into the powder through expander die, because it will drop a powder charge into the case (with a hole in the bottom) and powder will leak out into the primer feed, causing problems until you clean out the spilled powder. When operating the Pro-1000, learn to slow down as you swing the lever up to the top of its stroke. As you swing the lever up, the shell plate rotates 1/3 turn, the case trips the case sensor allowing a primer to slide onto the primer pin, and at the very end of the stroke the primer pin pushes the primer into the case. If you swing the lever too hurriedly, all this happens too quickly and you will frequently get tipped primers (because the case and/or primer are not in line). Slow down a little and when you hear the “click” as the shell plate snaps into position, hesitate for just a second, and then follow through with a firm push on the press lever (primer seating depth is dependent on a firm push on the press lever). This slight hesitation allows time for the primer to slide on top of the pin, and the case to come to rest over the primer pin before being pushed up into the primer pocket. With practice you will be able to feel through the press lever what it feels like when a primer starts into the case correctly, and when it doesn’t, and will be able to take corrective steps before you get incorrectly primed cases. Often just backing up slightly (push the lever back down just a little) and then taking another swing will correct the problem and the primer will seat correctly.

Brass Selection

There is no question that the brass you select is among the most important items in your reloading supplies. For those of you who are new to the world of reloading, “brass” refers to the cartridge case in which you load your primer, powder, and projectile. Choosing the perfect brass is one of the more challenging steps when getting started in reloading, as finding a brass you really like often comes down to trial and error.

If you are reloading just for “plinking” or varmint hunting, the brass you select only needs to be carefully inspected for cracks, bulges or any other signs of pressure damage that has weakened the case. If you are a bench rest shooter desiring the most consistently accurate ammo possible you need to adhere to a few more considerations in your brass selection. Here are a few quick tips that will help you find the best brass for your intended use:

Staying Safe

Brass cartridges are not designed for infinite firings and will eventually fail, so it’s best to only work with those cartridges for which you have a known firing history. Brass rarely suffers catastrophic failure but even small problems can cause complications in your firearm. Thus, it is highly recommended that you only reload new brass you have fired yourself or brass that is reputably known to be “once fired”.

Types Of Retail Brass

Retail brass comes in three main types:
• Military brass
• Bulk brass from big makers
• Premium brass from high-end makers

All of these types offer certain benefits, but also have their own limitations. One of the deciding factors to consider is which you would rather spend – your money or your time?

Military Cases

Military brass is typically made out of good-quality materials to uniform specs. It’s often relatively inexpensive, especially the once-fired variety. This makes it ideal for reloaders who shoot high volumes of ammo. While you can save money by choosing once-fired military brass, it will cost you more time, especially if you intend to prep it for high-accuracy applications. Brand new military brass is out there but costs more and due to current shortages might be more difficult to find than it once was.

Military brass often has a crimp in the primer pocket. You’ll have to remove the crimp prior to resizing. Another concern with military brass is that it may have been fired in anything from a match rifle with a tight chamber, to a machine gun with a long chamber. When prepping once-fired military brass for high accuracy applications, make sure you use a full length sizing die so it resizes the base of the case.

Bulk Commercial Cases

Bulk commercial brass like Federal, Remington and Winchester is available. It’s often priced in the middle range and it’s made to uniform specs that offers consistent primer pockets that don’t have to be swaged, which saves you prep time over once-fired military brass. Bulk commercial brass should be full length sized, trimmed and chamfered prior to loading as it’s not quite perfect.

Premium Cases

Premium brass from makers like Lapua, Norma and Nosler  costs a bit more. Premium brass is made out of high quality alloy to demanding specs and is almost always carefully annealed, which makes the case stand up to repeated firings and saves you money in the long run. Lapua brass is made to strict tolerances in concentricity and wall thickness. Norma brass is known for its very consistent wall thickness and drilled, not punched, flash holes that help ignition. Nosler brass comes with the necks already sized and the case mouth chamfered both inside and outside.

Weighing Your Brass

No matter what kind of brass you choose one step that is key to getting high accuracy is to sort the brass by weight. Many folks like to sort their brass before prepping, but it might be better to sort it after prepping, especially for high-accuracy applications. A good practice is to use cases that weigh within plus or minus .2 or .3 grains of each other. A high-quality scale is critical to sorting brass by weight. This is a must with military or bulk commercial cases. Even premium brass should be weighed and sorted as it’s very common to have 10 out of 100 cases outside that critical weight range.

Conclusion

Like any other complex process, it’s important to begin reloading with your final goal in mind. Do you want to make lots of ammo for plinking or varmint hunting, or are you trying to win a bench rest match? Once you know the goal, it’s easier to decide what type of cartridge case will best help you achieve it. Knowing the benefits and limitations of each type will help you make properly informed choices.

Reloading Consistency

As you learn more about reloading supplies and get more experienced with reloading your own ammunition, you’ll eventually want to improve the accuracy of your ammo. Once you’ve mastered the basics and feel comfortable with reloading and all the processes that come with it, it’s time to start taking stock of the things in your workflow that might affect the overall consistency of your ammunition.

Here’s the basic rule: Accuracy comes from consistency. Ammunition that has been reloaded with consistency in mind will be more accurate than ammo that has not, and the reloader’s goal should always be the most accurate, consistent reloadings he or she can manage. Focusing on consistency will make your reloading not just more enjoyable, but safer and more efficient as well.

Brass Consistency
If consistency is your goal, you should be using brass from the same production run. You can mix and match brass if you’re short on reloading supplies, but brass that shares a production run will always be more consistent than brass from a bunch of different manufacturers and sessions. No matter what kind of brass you choose one step that is key to getting high accuracy is to sort the brass by weight. Many folks like to sort their brass before prepping, but it might be better to sort it after prepping, especially for high-accuracy applications. A good practice is to use cases that weigh within plus or minus .2 or .3 grains of each other.

Powder Quality
Clean-burning, temperature stable powder is always going to deliver more consistent performance. While lower quality powders are available and will cost less in the short run, high quality powder is a necessity if you’re shifting the focus of your reloading supplies to creating consistency.

Powder Load
Carefully measuring your powder load is one of the single most important things you can do to control ammunition consistency. Eyeballing it simply isn’t enough if you’re working to improve accuracy in your shots. Test different powder loads with your brass to get a feel for what works best and then strive to match those loads exactly in every reload.

Equipment
You can get started with reloading by picking up the very basics in reloading supplies. But the better your equipment, the more precise your reloads. A high quality die is an absolute must, as is a very precise scale. Your reloads are only as good as your gear.

The Value of Experimentation

As you become more comfortable with reloading your own ammunition, your interests will likely shift from simply loading safely and correctly to loading ammunition that is consistent and accurate. Optimizing your ammunition for performance and consistency is one of the greatest challenges of being a reloader, and it’s also one of the most fun and exciting elements of the hobby. Experimentation, when done safely, is an excellent method for fine-tuning your reloading practices.

Different Reloading Supplies
Reloaders with years of experience often have one particular set of supplies they prefer. Brass, for instance, has more than one manufacturer and it’s inevitable that you’ll like the work of one more than the other. The best way to figure out which you prefer is to test as many different types as you can. This goes the same for almost all reloading supplies; different supplies give you different results right down to the tools you use to do the job.

Building on the Work of Others
The great thing about the reloading community is that it is very open to new reloaders. Visiting a reloading forum (or stopping by one of our monthly reloading workshops) is an excellent way to find out which setups have worked best for other reloaders and to get feedback on your ideas. Once you have a baseline as established by the community’s collective knowledge, you can fine-tune your workflows within that baseline for optimum results. This also helps you to stay safe while you experiment.

Finding the Fun
For many beginning reloaders, reloading can feel a touch stressful. There’s a lot of pressure to get the measurements and the process right, and you can lose yourself in the details. Once you’re comfortable, however, you’re free to start making informed decisions on the best way to move forward with the reloading process, allowing you to have a little more fun when working with your ammunition. Safety should always be a priority, but testing different reloading setups is certainly an exciting day at the range.

Reloading is about more than having the right reloading supplies. It’s about finding the right supplies for you, and figuring out how best to deploy those supplies for your needs.

First Time Progressive Loading

Progressive presses are designed for experienced reloaders, and shooters who go through several hundred rounds per week. Unlike a single stage loader, a progressive press causes many things to occur at the same time and because of this, there are many more things to monitor.

There is no reason you can’t start with a progressive press, but unless you go through over 200 rounds per week a progressive press is not really necessary. The Turret press is both less expensive and easier to set up, and (once set up) will reload 200+ rounds an hour in experienced hands. Setting up a progressive press requires patience and attention to detail.

The 50th Anniversary Kit 90050, the Classic Cast Turret Press Kit 90304 and the Value Turret Press Kit 90928 all contain the basic elements for a complete set up. Just order the die set or sets that correspond to the cartridges you wish to reload, and for rifle cartridges, a case length gauge/shell holder to maintain correct case length. The shell holder needed for the press to use the dies is included with all Lee Die sets other than RGB.

If you decide on a fully progressive press for your first, we would strongly advise loading one cartridge at a time until you are completely familiar with what functions are occurring at every station. Once you clearly understand the mechanics involved, then you can begin loading a new case with every stroke and be at “full tilt”.
