INSIGHT OF THE MONTH:

Cartridge Overall Length (O.A.L.) Determined

The overall length (o.a.l.) listed on the drawing in Modern Reloading is the SAAMI (Small Arms Ammunition Manufacturers Institute) specification. Most of the load data in the book was supplied to us by the powder manufactures. One can exceed the recommended maximum overall length as long as it doesn’t interfere with the function of the rifle. If your rifle will not accept ammunition loaded to a longer o.a.l. choose a different bullet/powder combination.

There are many tools on the market to determine the “free bore” of your particular rifle. This is the distance from the face of the bolt to the lands of the barrel. A handy way to determine this without such equipment is to use a fine marking pencil and a cleaning rod. Use something to make the internal portion of the threads of the cleaning rod blunt so that a tip of a bullet cannot go into the concave portion. Even a piece of Duct tape will suffice temporarily. With the bolt out of the gun and the bullet you intend to use placed and held up against the lands and grooves of the barrel, place your cleaning rod in from the muzzle until you feel it stop against the tip of the bullet. Mark this spot on the cleaning rod from the muzzle end. Remove the bullet and repeat the procedure with the bolt in and closed. The distance between the two marks will be a close indicator of the maximum Cartridge Overall Length for that particular bullet.

PERFECT POWDER MEASURE ON A TURRET PRESS

The Perfect Powder Measure is designed to charge rifle calibers that are larger than the throw capacity of the Auto Disk powder measures. It is fully automatic when mounted on a Load Master progressive press using the Universal Charging Die 90273. As a case is raised up into the die the powder measure actuates to drop a charge and as the ram is lowered the powder measure is reset to the fill position as it is attached to the press ram by means of a chain. The Perfect Powder Measure works in the exact same way on a turret press except the measure must be reset to the fill position manually. This is because the measure rotates around in the turret making it impossible to attach a chain to the ram. The powder measure must be setup on the press in only one position as shown in the following pictures. Note that in the drop and fill positions the adjustable powder vile of the powder measure is directly toward you as you stand in front of the press.

With the powder hopper removed you can see that the drum body and lever of the powder measure are located on the backside away from you at 45 degrees.

To clear the Safety Primer Feed as the turret rotates around the powder measure must remain in the drop position until the powder die rotates above the case. This is when you manually flip the lever on the powder measure and reset it to the fill position. Now raise the ram to drop the charge and leave the measure in the drop position until it comes around for the next case. The powder measure bumps the Safety Primer tray slightly as it rotates by but I like that as it jiggles the primers to prevent them from wedging against one another in the tray.

I always try to keep our newsletter “light and cheery” but I am absolutely astonished by the number of intelligent Americans who do not take this new M855 ammo ban seriously. This administration launched “Fast and Furious” right out of the box to blame America’s gun culture. Then they bought up ammo in enormous quantities leaving the store shelves empty for “us subjects”. They have been militarizing our police departments across the country with equipment intended for fighting full scale wars. Now our King wants to ban M855 ammo because they say it can penetrate body armor. It is more than obvious what they are gearing up for and WE MUST STOP IT! Our Founding Fathers, who understood the tyrannical nature of man, gave us the 2nd Amendment to ensure that “We the People” could stop tyranny and now our King wants to ban the ammo that could in fact stop agents of tyranny. HEADS UP AMERICA……they have plans for you and your children. STAND TALL and BE HEARD…..if you are NOT Okay with these changes. They know what they’re planning for us and so should we, if we pay attention to what’s been going on. There’s a reason they’re using the backdoor and there’s a reason they are afraid of our guns. I do not advocate for an armed uprising ( our Founders would have been shooting by now ) but the time has come for all 2nd Amendment supporters to STAND TALL to BE HEARD and avoid any need for an uprising! All of our liberties are guaranteed by the 2nd Amendment, we cannot allow it to be “infringed”.

Turret Press Indexing Explained

The square ratchet is both free to rotate inside the clamp and held fast by the clamp, depending on which direction the ram is moving. If you are lowering the press lever (raising the ram) you don’t want the turret to rotate, so the square ratchet must be free to rotate inside the clamp. The friction between the square ratchet and the index rod causes the square ratchet to slide down to the bottom of the cavity inside the clamp, where it is free to rotate when it passes over the twist in the index rod. On the upswing of the press lever (as the ram goes down) the drag between the square ratchet and index rod causes the square ratchet to slide up to the top of the cavity inside the clamp, where the square ratchet fits into matching notches in the clamp which prevent the square ratchet from turning, so as it passes the twist in the index rod it turns the turret.

Included with the Deluxe and Classic Turret Presses is a spare black nylon ratchet. This installs inside the black auto index clamp on the steel ram. The square black ratchet rides on the 1/4″x 1/4″ steel index rod. When removing the aluminum turret, be sure to raise the ram to disengage the square ratchet from the twisted part of the rod.

The nylon square ratchet that comes with the turret press is designed to properly index the press for 10s of thousands of rounds; however, an extra does comes with the press. This inexpensive part is made of nylon for two reasons with the first being that if the index rod is operated against the proper rotation, the nylon will fail before any damage occurs to any other part. The second is that they are inexpensive to produce and purchase.

The ratchet enables the indexing without “tweaking” or adjustment. The index rod may be removed and replaced at will without affecting the timing of the press. In the unlikely event that your press was received and not indexing correctly, the ratchet is not the reason and the issue is easily resolved by turret press index alignment.

The only reason the ratchet would be damaged is from forcing the index rod against that ratchet. This generally occurs when turrets are removed with the ram at the bottom of the stroke as the ratchet is engaged during the down stroke. When removing turrets, it is necessary to raise the ram about an inch or so.

A problem can ultimately affect indexing if the ratchet is excessively forced against the index rod, because the top portion of the ram, designed to rotate for another reason, would do so under these circumstances. Then, even with the ratchet replaced, the entire housing is off center. The proper alignment of the housing is completed by using the lever portion of the priming arm and aligning it with the two bumps on the base of the press

The nylon housing that holds the ratchet never needs to be opened other than to eventually replace the nylon ratchet. Remove the index rod, then the housing by removing the horizontal screw. Replace the ratchet remembering to place the flange in the downward position and reattach the nylon housing. This housing does nothing more than contain the ratchet. Do not over tighten the screw because the threads can be stripped.

Easy to Set and Read Micrometer Metering Chamber

Powder charge adjustment is accomplished with a true micrometer adjustable metering chamber. The brass micrometer thimble is engraved with .01cc graduations and has a releasable detent lock. With most rifle powders each click is about a 1/10 of a grain, perfect for working up a load.

Changing Powder is Fast and Easy

The Classic Powder Measure features an easily removable ½ pound capacity hopper with an on/off valve so you can quickly return unused powder to its original container or switch to another type. The hopper feeds to a pre-measuring chamber allowing precise charges regardless of the powder level in the hopper, no additional powder baffle required.

Proper case lubrication and frequency of lubrication

When full length sizing cases in non-carbide dies, it is necessary to properly lubricate the case and the inside of the case neck so that it will not get stuck during resizing into the steel die. With a properly lubed case, our Reloader Press or Breech Lock Hand Press will easily accomplish proper resizing of even the largest of magnum cases.

If you are resizing rifle or handgun cases in a steel die, you should lube every case. If you are sizing pistol cases in a Lee carbide die, lube every 25th case or so to make resizing easier.

Using Lee Resizing Lubricant 90006, spread a small amount around the case from below the shoulder down to the rim so that there is a thin film. With the small amount of film that remains on your finger, “scrape” some into the inside of the case neck. Even though it’s only on one side of the inside case neck, resize the case. Additional cases that have had the same procedure ensures that the decapper / expander inside the sizing die is properly lubricated. This method is far easier and faster than using the many utensils meant to completely coat the inside of the case neck.

Although you are not required to lube cases for use in carbide dies, we have found that if you just briefly roll the cases around in a cloth that has a light amount of oil on it, the increased ease of case sizing is very noticeable.

This month Robin and I would like to point out a few features on our website that will help you navigate quickly to the products you’re looking for and also calculate the shipping costs for an order.

The first feature is the “Search” engine located on the upper right corner of the website. With this tool you can search for a Lee part number which will result in the item’s listing appearing below the “Search Criteria” for selection. Click on the listing picture to go directly to the listing for ordering. If you are not sure what the part number is you can also search by item name (i.e. powder funnel, dies etc.) and then scroll through the items that appear on the lower portion of the page for selection. When you search for an item name everything related to that product will appear. A great way to narrow down the results is to type in a caliber (i.e. 223, 30/06, 45 ACP etc.) which will produce all the items related to the caliber. Be sure to select “All Categories” in the field below “Keywords” so the whole website will be searched.

The second feature is the “Site Map” located at the bottom of the “Information” area on the left side of the website. The Site Map shows the category structure of our website on one page and allows you to go directly to any category on the site with one click of the mouse. Most of the RED text on our website (except page titles) are actually links that when “Clicked On” go directly to the subject of the text.

The third feature is the “Shipping Estimator” located on the right side of the website below the “Search” and “Shopping Cart”. Add all the items you want to order into the shopping cart and then, rather than going to checkout, select your Country, State/Region and Postal Code in the shipping estimator and click “Estimate”. This will return the cost of shipping and the results are displayed directly below the Shipping Estimator. Depending on the size of your screen, you may have to scroll down to see these results. If you are logged into your account you must clear the shopping cart if you choose not to order. If you are not logged into an account you can simply abandon the shopping cart and all will be cleared.

The final feature is for the many friends we have made all over the world. Located directly below the Shipping Estimator on the right side of the website is a “Translator”. With this tool you can select from many languages and convert the entire website to that language.

TITAN TUBE HARNESS

The TITAN TUBE HARNESS is an ABS plastic “3D Printed” product that clips onto the 4 feed tubes of the Lee Case Feeders and the Lee Bullet Feed Multi-Tube Adapters. This product holds the feed tubes securely making the Case Collator easier to install and remove from the feed tubes. It also secures the tubes of the Multi-Tube Bullet Feed Adapters and allows you to install the tubes loaded with bullets as the tubes snap into the harness from the side.

TITAN PRIMER CHUTE

The TITAN PRIMER CHUTE is an ABS plastic “3D printed” part that fits snugly into the base of a Lee Pro 1000 or Value Turret Press. The chute funnels spent primers down to a spout where they drop through a 3/4″ hole drilled through the bench top. The spout accepts a PVC Tube (sold separately) that holds the spent primers. With the Titan Primer Chute you will never need to unbolt the press to empty the spent primers again.

Selecting a Disk to get the Desired Powder Charge

The Auto Disk powder measures use a system called Volume Metered Density (VMD) to dispense powder. The cavities in the disk have a number assigned to them which is actually the volume of the cavity in cubic centimeters. The powder companies provide a VMD number or value for each type of powder. If you multiply the number of grains you wish to dispense times the VMD value the answer is the theoretical volume in cubic centimeters that are necessary to hold that grain weight of powder. Or grain weight x VMD = cubic centimeters. CLICK HERE to find the Powder Manufacture’s VMD’s.

Once you know the number of cubic centimeters it takes to hold the powder charge you wish to dispense, you can choose the proper disks. You choose the disk combination that is closest in size to the value of the formula without going over. ALWAYS CHECK your charges with a scale to verify that you are achieving the desired Load Data grain weight.

INSIGHT OF THE MONTH:

VMD Explanation

The Volume Measured Density (VMD) of a powder is the volume in cc’s (cubic centimeter) that one grain of powder occupies. This can be used to calculate the dipper, disk cavity or powder measure setting required to obtain a desired weight of powder.

Example:

If a powder has a VMD of .1064 , and the desired charge weight is 4 grains,

4 x .1064 = .4256, or . 43 cc’s

This would translate to the .3cc dipper, (because the next larger one is beyond.43 ccs) the .43cc disk cavity, and a .43cc setting on the Perfect powder measure.

Using any setting on your powder measure (preferably a whole number), drop a charge of the powder you wish to determine the VMD for. Weigh the charge. Divide the measure setting you used to drop the charge by the weight of the charge. The result is the volume (cc) of a single grain of powder (VMD)

It is VERY IMPORTANT that you repeat this process with any new container of the same powder because the powder companies allow themselves a 16% tolerance between batches. This can result in over charging if you work from the same setting and the next container of powder you get is more dense. In any case, ALWAYS CHECK your powder drop with a scale to be sure that the desired load data grain weight is achieved.

Auto Disk and Rifle Charging

The Auto Disk and Pro Auto Disk powder measures are primarily designed to charge handgun cases. This is due to the capacity that these measures drop. Even the largest cavity is not enough to charge rifle cases larger than .223 sized. With the double disk kit, you should be able to charge .308 sized cases.

We do offer the Rifle Charging Die which allows the measures to be used for charging rifle cases and it works in the same manner as the Powder Through Expander dies from our handgun die sets. The primary difference is that this die does not expand the case mouth.

To properly charge rifle cases, we highly recommend the use of our Universal Charging Die which adapts to the Perfect Powder Measure as opposed to the Auto Disk measures. This measure has the capacity to charge very large rifle cases in a single throw. One should remember however, that it is necessary to wait briefly when the case engages the measure so that larger amounts of powder have ample time to drop into the case. This option is only viable if you are using a fully progressive press.

PROPER POWDER STORAGE

Some years ago I read an article by Charles “Skeeter” Skelton, the handgun editor of Shooting Times magazine. He told a story of how he had loaded up what he called “stout” loads for a friend. The friend tried to shoot a range bull that was down and needed to be killed. The rounds went “poop” and bounced off the bull’s skull at point blank range. Skeeter went back and checked his powder measure which had been left with the powder in it for quite some time prior to cooking up the loads. When he dumped the powder out he found lots of it adhering, actually melted into the plastic hopper. He realized that the chemical reaction between the powder and the plastic hopper caused degradation of the powder. He was correct as this is the first reasons you should empty the powder back into the bottle after a reloading session.

When I first started reloading, I recall reading from loading manuals of the day that there were a number possible problems from leaving powder in the hopper.

1. Powder attacking the plastic hopper and degrading the powder as in the previous story. Nitrocellulose powders are extruded thru use of a solvent, Acetone mainly, to soften it and make it plastic for processing it. Acetone can melt or soften polystyrene plastics. Nitroglycerine-augmented nitrocellulose powders (double-base) involve even more solvents to introduce the EXTRA nitro into the guncotton.

2. Confusion later as to which powder is in the hopper leading to using the wrong amount/weight of powder in a load.

3. Powder being adversely affected by UV light (from a window or fluorescent lights), leading to decomposition or change in burning rate. Powder comes in opaque cans for a reason, powder will degrade in light over time.

4. Degradation of the powder from exposure to humidity because a hopper will not seal as well as the powder bottle or jug. Smokeless powder is hydrophilic (it will absorb humidity from the air) and when it absorbs water, it swells and this will change the burning characteristics of the powder. Only the top half inch or so will swell like this. This makes any later charges thrown from that powder less powerful than the first charges thrown from dry powder, but not consistently so. Most basement reloading rooms have higher humidity than any other room in the house (excepting the bathroom). The manufacturers go to great pains to maintain consistent moisture levels for every batch they make. For that reason alone you should store your powder in a tightly sealed original can after each loading session.

I highly recommend using the proper powder storage procedures and as a final point of emphasis is the following statement found on the Hodgdon’s reloading data website:

“Powder left in the reloader’s powder measure hoppers for extended periods, overnight or several days, should be avoided. Powder needs to be stored in original containers ONLY, when not in use. Numerous modern smokeless powders are double base in construction, containing both Nitrocellulose and Nitroglycerine.”

INSIGHT OF THE MONTH:

Unlisted Powders In Load All Chart

There are many new powders on the market that are not yet listed on the bushing chart of the Load All. Using these directions, one can determine the proper bushing to use for these newer powders.

It is first necessary to establish a base line. This is done by dropping the powder of your choice in any bushing and weighing the charge. Divide the test bushing number by the weight in grains that was dropped from it. This gives you the MVD (Measured Volume Density) for the new powder.

Then, multiply the MVD number times the desired charge for that powder. The result is the bushing number you should use. All bushings have molded numbers. Be sure to use the leading decimal in your calculation. Since the result may not come out perfectly, use the next smaller bushing size. Always confirm the charge before loading when calculating the capacity.

Below is the math formula for this calculation.

Test bushing number

Weight of that charge

MVD x Desired charge of new powder = Correct bushing size.

The MVD number is not to be confused with the VMD numbers commonly used in many of our powder measuring tools. Do not use a VMD (Volume Measure Density) number that you find in any of our literature for the purposes of this specific calculation as it would create a dangerous condition.

Shot Shell Crimp Problems

Crimp problems are usually caused by not having the correct wad length for the shell and components selected. If the crimp is too deep use a longer wad. If none are available, you can use a wad that is too short and use a fiber or a cardboard wad from a smaller gauge to take up the excess space. It is usually best to place this directly below the shot. Even a crumbled scrap of paper will do.

Sometimes a wad slightly long can be compressed in the wad starting station. Do this by moving the wad starter up 1/4 inch (for 3″ shells). Then use a 1/4 inch spacer under the shell. The spacer should have a hole in the center so nothing will touch the primer. A few washers work fine. This will then permit the wad to be seated deeper.

Poorly formed crimps can be caused by using the wrong crimp starter, 6 or 8 segment, or starting in the wrong place. Be sure to align exactly on the fold. With some brands of shells a better crimp is formed by starting exactly in the wrong place. That is where the shell previously folded out, recrimp with the fold in.
