Pro 1000 Priming Explained

The trick to the Pro-1000 priming system is to learn to develop a “feel” through the press lever. By now you can probably tell when a primer seats correctly and when one doesn’t. If it doesn’t feel like a primer seated correctly, STOP and pull the case out! You don’t want to run a case without a primer up into the powder through expander die, because it will drop a powder charge into the case (with a hole in the bottom) and powder will leak out into the primer feed, causing problems until you clean out the spilled powder.  When operating the Pro-1000, learn to slow down as you swing the lever up to the top of its stroke. As you swing the lever up, the shellplate rotates 1/3 turn, the case trips the case sensor allowing a primer to slide onto the primer pin, and at the very end of the stroke the primer pin pushes the primer into the case. If you swing the lever too hurriedly, all this happens too quickly and you will frequently get tipped primers (because the case and/or primer are not in line). Slow down a little and when you hear the “click” as the shellplate snaps into position, hesitate for just a second, and then follow through with a firm push on the press lever (primer seating depth is dependent on a firm push on the press lever). This slight hesitation allows time for the primer to slide on top of the pin, and the case to come to rest over the primer pin before being pushed up into the primer pocket. With practice you will be able to feel through the press lever what it feels like when a primer starts into the case correctly, and when it doesn’t, and will be able to take corrective steps before you get incorrectly primed cases. Often just backing up slightly (push the lever back down just a little) and then taking another swing will correct the problem and the primer will seat correctly.

Cast Bullet Leading

A clue to what is causing the leading is where the leading first begins to appear. If it appears near the chamber, chances are that bullet diameter or hardness are the cause.

A diameter too small and/or too hard an alloy will allow high pressure gas to leak past the bullet, which erodes the bullet and leaves leading near the chamber.

If the leading first appears on the leading edge of the rifling (if you imagine the bullet being pushed through the barrel, you will note that one edge of the rifling does most of the work of imparting a spin to the bullet. This is the edge you see when you look through the barrel from the breech end) the bullet might be too soft, and/or the velocity too high.
A good rule of thumb for maximum velocities when using liquid alox is 1400 feet per second for plain base bullets and 2200 feet per second when using gas check bullets. Bore conditions will require you increase or decrease this velocity slightly to prevent leading.

If the leading appears in the second half of the barrel, the bullet is running out of lube. You should see a star shaped pattern of lube accumulate on the muzzle. This is an indication that there is a little excess lube.

Bullet Seating Depth Variations

There are a number of possible causes for overall length variation. One is the way it is measured. If you measure overall length from the tip of the bullet to the base of the case, remember to subtract the variation due to bullet length tolerance. The bullets will vary in length due to manufacturing tolerances (bullets with exposed lead noses are the worst in this regard) and this will add to the overall cartridge length variation. Remember that the bullet seater plug does not (or shouldn’t) contact the tip of the bullet when seating, but contacts farther down the ogive. For a more accurate seating depth measurement, take the seater plug out of the bullet seating die, place it on top of the cartridge and measure from the base of the case to the top of the seater plug.

Another possible cause for bullet seating depth variation is seating and crimping at the same time when trying to apply a firm crimp to untrimmed cases. Variation in case length also causes variation in the amount of crimp applied. Long cases get a heavier crimp than short ones. When seating and crimping at the same time, the crimp is formed as the bullet is seated into the case. The crimp will form sooner on a long case, and therefore the bullet will not be seated as deeply. The solution is to seat and crimp in a separate step (the Lee Factory Crimp die is good for this) and/or trim cases to a uniform length.

The amount of force required to cycle a progressive press varies with the number of cases in the shell plate. When the shell plate is full, it is harder to lower the lever than when there are one or two cases present. This can lead to variation in cartridge overall length because there are different loads placed on the working parts of the press. When the shell plate is full, seating depth will be slightly long, because the load is higher and all of the clearances are taken up. With the shell plate nearly empty, the load is not great enough to squeeze out these clearances, and the seating depth is short.

Harley-Davidson motorcycles were invented right here in Milwaukee Wisconsin and it seems like as soon as the “Rockin’ Robins” come back they bring the rumblin’ of summer as well. I have to admit I am tempted to through the battery in the Hog myself as 55 degrees feels like summer. Auto Bench Prime Jamming Issue

If you do not lift the lever firmly enough, you may get a primer fed against the flash gate and a second primer in the elevator. To release trapped primer, use a paper clip to slide the primer back into the elevator. To prevent this from happening, firmly lift against the rubber up stop, or remove the rubber up stop o-ring with a pocket knife.

When installing a primer be sure to raise the lever back up to the top stop. If you simply let go of the lever at the bottom of the stroke the spring can return the lever with enough force to release another unwanted primer.

INSIGHT OF THE MONTH:

Load Master Priming Problems

To get a Load Master working properly, there are a few things to consider that are inherent to the design of the press.

1. Each die in each set needs to be set properly so that the work is completed at the very top of the stroke. This is more necessary with a Load Master than a Dillon because the Load Master primes on the upstroke and it is an adjustable setting. Consider that if you set a die too deeply to prevent the carrier from reaching the top, and then set the primer seating depth to properly seat primers with this die set, everything works fine. Then, you switch calibers and the next die set allows the carrier to go further up – then your previously set primer system is now setting too deeply. All of the symptoms will show up – tilted primers, smashed primers, broken primer system parts, etc. In conclusion, all die sets should allow the carrier to go the top and have the work done at that location. If this is done, the primer system has to be set once and that’s it.

2. If the primer adjustment is set too deeply, what happens is that the primer slider has to try and place a primer up and on an already rising post. This results in damaged parts and mounds of frustration with the above symptoms. This is how to set it properly, but after doing so, operation has to be done in conjunction with #1. With no turret in the press, put a fired case (with spent primer in it) into station one and advance it to station #2. Be sure the primer seating depth bolt (on the left side of the press) is turned as high as it will go. When the carrier is at the top with the fired case in station #2, hold the handle down to keep the carrier at the top. With your left hand, push the primer rocker arm (the lever that the depth bolt pushes) down as far as it will go. This puts the priming plunger up tight against the bottom of the case. Turn the primer depth bolt down to meet this location (until it stops), lower the carrier and turn the bolt down further not quite a half turn more and secure it. Along with #1, you have just solved the priming problems that many complain about.

3. Primer problems on the Load Master is usually caused by the primer pin sticking up a small amount. To fix this problem you must determine what is causing the pin to not completely retract.

To solve these issues, start by removing the primer trough, looking into the carrier you will find a hexagon hole, on one of the corners of the hex there is a shelf to prevent the primer pin from dropping down too far. This shelf can become fouled with dirt, gunpowder, or case cleaning media. Clean this shelf of any foreign material.

Now carefully inspect the primer pin for any nicks or burrs. A small nick on the large diameter of the pin will cause it to stick up and cause primer tipping. Lubricate the large diameter of the primer pin with a very light film of oil and return it to the primer feed well. Be sure the small spring is installed and intact.

Remove the trough cover and carefully inspect the hole where the primer passes through. Remove any burrs on this hole with a sharp razor knife. Feel free to enlarge the hole to remove any burr. The hole does not provide guidance for the primer, but any burr will cause a potential tipped primer. Carefully inspect the primer slider for any nicks, burrs or flash and be certain you have the correct slider for the primer size (small or large).

Reinstall the trough cover and apply a very small drop of oil to the black primer lever pivot. Now reinstall the primer trough. Cycle the primer rocker and be sure the primer pin retracts completely.

Now is a good time to check the primer seating depth bolt for proper adjustment. Remove the turret and run the press to the top of the stroke. Push down on the primer rocker arm. If you are unable to push the rocker arm down a small amount you likely have the primer depth bolt set down too far. Many times, this is the result of incorrectly set dies at some point. If a sizing die is set further than to just touch the shell holder, the carrier cannot go all the way to the top. This can make the user believe that the primer seating depth is now incorrect and not deep enough. When the deeper adjustment is made to the primer depth, the priming pin rises prematurely. This causes the primer slider to have to push the primer up and on the pin instead of simply sliding it on. This setting results in tipped primers and destroyed primer sliders. More damage can occur when the carrier can once again go to the top because the offending die has been readjusted or a different and properly adjusted die set installed. The deeper primer adjustment is now putting far too much pressure on the primer rocker arm and a destroyed carrier will result.

One last helpful change is to place your sizing die in position 2 with its decapper removed. Put a decapping die in position one. This will align case perfectly to accept the primer.

LEE CARBIDE or STEEL PISTOL 3 DIE SETS

Lee Carbide 3 Die Set

Lee uses a solid carbide insert, ground to a special contour that does not leave the objectionable belt mark on the case, common to ordinary carbide dies. With a carbide sizer, no case lube is needed, and you don’t even have to clean your cases.

No need for a taper crimp die, plus better accuracy with Lee dies. Taper crimp dies are used to correct the problems caused by the improper expanding plug design or adjustment. They distort the bullet shank and reduce accuracy. Because the Lee Expander flares the minimum amount, consistent with easy bullet insertion, all of the flare is removed with the bullet seating die, thus eliminating the need for a taper crimp die. The Bullet Seating Die is an adjustable crimp from slight taper to full roll.

Interchangeable Dies

Frequently, dies from one caliber may be used to load other calibers. Due to the locations of crimping shoulders and expander plug lengths, the operation will only work for dies of the shorter caliber to the longer caliber. In example, to load .357 Magnum cartridges with .38 Special dies, the Sizing Die (1st die) setting stays the same for both calibers. The Powder Through Expanding Die (2nd die) and the Bullet Seating Die (3rd die) must be backed out approximately 2 turns for the .357 Magnum. This is the difference in length from the .38 Special to the .357 Magnum. This setting must be tweaked in as 2 turn is approximate.

Even though some dies are interchangeable, in many cases, different shell holders are necessary. You can see a complete list of shellholders under “Case Preparation” then “Shellholders and Calibers”.

**Lee dies allow the use of .308 bullets in the 32 H&R Magnum. The other bullet diameter commonly used is .311 and that is the expander that comes with the set. To use .308 bullets, it is necessary to purchase an additional expander and turn it down to .308. This can be done using a drill press and emery cloth

Robin and I are excited to announce that Titan Reloading will be moving during the month of August. Last fall we bought a building on the other side of Hartford and we are very close to having it ready for our move. The exact dates of the move are not known as yet due to the final work that needs to be done but we anticipate the middle of this month. We will be placing the website in maintenance mode while we move so we can take a complete inventory during the process. We hope to complete the move in two days and when done the website will be up and running as usual. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause but fear not, we will better than ever once we are done.

INSIGHT OF THE MONTH:

Bullet Seating Die Adjustment

The trick is to set the bullet seating depth first, then the crimp. This is done as follows; With an empty, sized case in the shell holder, hold the ram at the top of its stroke. Turn the bullet seating die body down over the case until you feel it come to a stop. This will be when the case mouth contacts the crimp shoulder inside the die. Mark this position by turning the lock ring down against the turret or press frame. Now adjust your bullet seating depth. Once you have the bullet seated to the desired depth, back the bullet seater adjuster out about 1 turn. Now turn the bullet seating die body in to apply the desired crimp. Once this is established, hold the ram at the top of its stroke and spin the bullet seater adjuster down until it stops.

It is a good idea to carry this out with an empty case, so that after you have seated the bullet, you have a perfectly safe “dummy” cartridge (or gauge) to repetitively set seating depth and crimp on future occasions.

Once you have this “dummy” gauge, all you have to do is place it in the shell holder, raise the ram to the top of its stroke, turn the bullet seating body down until it stops, and then turn the bullet seating depth adjuster in until it stops. Since the crimp and the seating depth were already set, the die will return to very close to the same settings.

Seating Depth Variations

There are a number of possible causes for overall length variation. One is the way it is measured. If you measure overall length from the tip of the bullet to the base of the case, remember to subtract the variation due to bullet length tolerance. The bullets will vary in length due to manufacturing tolerances (bullets with exposed lead noses are the worst in this regard) and this will add to the overall cartridge length variation. Remember that the bullet seater plug does not (or shouldn’t) contact the tip of the bullet when seating, but contacts farther down the ogive. For a more accurate seating depth measurement, take the seater plug out of the bullet seating die, place it on top of the cartridge and measure from the base of the case to the top of the seater plug.

Another possible cause for bullet seating depth variation is seating and crimping at the same time when trying to apply a firm crimp to untrimmed cases. Variation in case length also causes variation in the amount of crimp applied. Long cases get a heavier crimp than short ones. When seating and crimping at the same time, the crimp is formed as the bullet is seated into the case. The crimp will form sooner on a long case, and therefore the bullet will not be seated as deeply. The solution is to seat and crimp in a separate step (the Lee Factory Crimp die is good for this) and/or trim cases to a uniform length.

LEE BENCH PLATE SYSTEM

Crushed Cases

While there can be many reasons for a case to be crushed in the reloading process, there are primarily two.

The first is that the bullet seating die is not set properly. If the crimp shoulder is set too deeply, the case is crimped before the bottom of the press stroke is achieved. Once the bullet is seated, additional pressure pushes the already heavily crimped case into the die further resulting in a crushed case. This is a common occurrence with thin and long case necks such as the 30-30 Winchester or long pistol rounds such as the .357 Magnum. Be sure to set the die per instructions.

The second reason is generally associated with the Lee Collet Dies. If the collet in the die has been collapsed, the case neck can not clearly enter the collet area. This results in a crushed and/or buckled case. This can be avoided by not operating the die without a case in it. If this happens, it is necessary to remove the collet and pry the collet leaves back so that they stay apart when inserted back into the die. The ID of the die body will cause the leaves to stay uniformity apart.

Shot Shell Crimp Problems

Crimp problems are usually caused by not having the correct wad length for the shell and components selected. If the crimp is too deep use a longer wad. If none are available, you can use a wad that is too short and use a fiber or a cardboard wad from a smaller gauge to take up the excess space. It is usually best to place this directly below the shot. Even a crumbled scrap of paper will do.

Sometimes a wad slightly long can be compressed in the wad starting station. Do this by moving the wad starter up 1/4 inch (for 3″ shells). Then use a 1/4 inch spacer under the shell. The spacer should have a hole in the center so nothing will touch the primer. A few washers work fine. This will then permit the wad to be seated deeper.

Poorly formed crimps can be caused by using the wrong crimp starter, 6 or 8 segment, or starting in the wrong place. Be sure to align exactly on the fold. With some brands of shells a better crimp is formed by starting exactly in the wrong place. That is where the shell previously folded out, recrimp with the fold in.
