INSIGHT OF THE MONTH:

Bullet Weights Not Found In Manuals

If the bullet weight you wish to load is not found in your favorite manual, it is safe to use loads listed for a heavier weight bullet and find a load for the powder you have. Using that load with the lighter bullet simply reduces the pressure, and the velocity remains approximately the same.

Many times the powder manufacturer’s websites are good places to find load data. Refer to the following list of websites.

INSIGHT OF THE MONTH:

The difference between the commercial .223 Remington and the military 5.56×45 NATO cartridges has been the topic of conversation a lot lately. These are the facts on this issue. The following diagrams (found on the Wikipedia website) are of the .223 REM and the 5.56 NATO rounds. In studying the actual dimensions you will see that they are exactly the same. The only difference in the rounds themselves is that the 5.56 NATO is loaded to higher pressures and velocities than the .223 Remington.

Commercial .223 Remington

Military 5.56×45 NATO

The higher pressures and velocities of the 5.56 NATO is made possible by the real difference between these two calibers. The following diagram (found on AR15.com) shows the rifle chambers of both the 5.56 NATO and the .223 Rem rifles. Note that the 5.56 NATO has slightly more headspace (.226″ dia./.073″) and a longer leade or throat (.164″) as compared to .223 Rem at (.224″ dia./.040″) headspace and (.045″) leade. The longer 5.56 leade decreases the included angle to .0427 degrees compared to 3 deg 10′ 40″ on the .223 in the transition down to the .219″ bore diameter. The longer leade and headspace allows for the hotter loads in the 5.56 NATO. You can fire .223 Rem cartridges in a rifle chambered for 5.56 NATO but you should NOT fire 5.56 NATO cartridges in a rifle chambered for .223 Rem. There may be high pressure signs on the primers and brass, cycling problems and extraction failures when 5.56 NATO rounds are fired in a .223 Rem rifle.

The .223 Rem is slightly more accurate and a better choice for benchrest shooters, competition match shooters or varmint hunters. The 5.56 NATO is better for those who want to target shoot with surplus military ammo or use the rifle as a self defense weapon. The .223 Rem die sets are used to reload both 5.56 NATO and .223 REM because the external dimensions of the actual rounds are the same.

LEE DELUXE PERFECT POWDER MEASURE

One of the nicest features is the ability to use the new Lee standard quick-change drums (product # 90453). These low cost drums can be preset to your favorite charge and swapped out in seconds.

INSIGHT OF THE MONTH:

Load Master Setup

I have talked about this in the past however we have made many new friends. This insight is critical to the function of the Load Master press and I want to make it available. The following is from an article found in our FAQ section. If these steps are followed most of any problems that can occur on a Load Master will be eliminated.

To get a Load Master working properly, there are a few things to consider that are inherent to the design of the press. First I need to stress the importance of a sturdy bench to mount your Load Master to. The press should not be able to flex and jiggle when you apply pressure to the handle at the top of the ram stroke. The priming system slides the primer on top of  the priming pin just before the top of the ram stroke and then at the top the priming pin is raised to push the primer into the pocket in the case. If the press jiggles at this crucial moment the primer can move slightly. If it moves far enough it will catch one side of the pocket and the primer will tip over. A sturdy bench is an absolute must.

Each die in each set needs to be set properly so that the work is completed at the very top of the stroke. This is more necessary with a Load Master than a Dillon because the Load Master primes on the upstroke and it is an adjustable setting. Consider that if you set a die too deeply to prevent the carrier from reaching the top, and then set the primer seating depth to properly seat primers with this die set, everything works fine. Then, you switch calibers and the next die set allows the carrier to go further up – then your previously set primer system is now setting too deeply. All of the symptoms will show up – tilted primers, smashed primers, broken primer system parts, etc. In conclusion, all die sets should allow the carrier to go to the top and have the work done at that location. If this is done, the primer system has to be set once and that’s it.

If the primer adjustment is set too deeply, what happens is that the primer slider has to try and place a primer up and on an already rising post. This results in damaged parts and mounds of frustration with the above symptoms. This is how to set it properly but you must set the dies properly first as described in the previous paragraph. With no turret in the press, put a fired case (with spent primer in it) into station one and advance it to station #2. Be sure the primer seating depth bolt (on the left side of the press) is turned as high as it will go. When the carrier is at the top with the fired case in station #2, hold the handle down to keep the carrier at the top. With your left hand, push the primer rocker arm (the lever that the depth bolt pushes) down as far as it will go. This puts the priming plunger up tight against the bottom of the case. Turn the primer depth bolt down to meet this location (until it stops), lower the carrier and turn the bolt down further not quite a half turn more and secure it.

DIE SET EXPLANATION

Pacesetter 3 Die Set

Use these dies if you want to produce factory dimensioned ammo that reliably fits and feeds in any gun. They are the first choice for semi-auto actions. Full-length sizing is a must if you are reloading for more than one firearm or reloading cases that were fired in others firearms. Includes a full length sizing die, bullet seating die, factory crimp die, shell holder, powder dipper and load data. This set is recommended for assembling ammunition for hunting purposes as the finished rounds chamber easily and can withstand rough handling of the firearm action.

Pacesetter 2 Die Set

Same as above, but production quantities are lower. This set consists of a two die set which includes a full length steel sizing die (requires case lubrication), bullet seating die, shell holder, powder dipper and load data.

Collet Die Set

Use these dies for best accuracy, longest case life and no resizing lubricant. Only the neck of the case is resized the body is untouched so it retains the perfect fit to your guns chamber. Cases should have been fired in your firearm only and reloaded rounds are intended for use in just one firearm. These dies are the favorite of the bench rest crowd as there is no other die that can produce a more accurate cartridge. Includes the Collet neck sizing die, dead length bullet seating die, shell holder, powder dipper and load data.

This set is designed for assembling the most accurate ammunition but is not recommended for hunting rounds as the case is neck sized only and the bullet is not crimped in the case.

Ultimate Rifle 4 Die Set

This is essentially a Collet die set with the addition of the steel full length sizing die and factory crimp die so that one can prepare newly acquired cases for the first firing in the rifle.

INSIGHT OF THE MONTH:

Shot Shell Buckled Cases

Wrinkled or buckled shells usually means that there is too much compression in the shell. Try applying more wad seating pressure, use slightly less shot, use a denser powder (a powder that uses a smaller bushing for the same dram equivalent) or a shorter wad.

Kink During Last Crimp

If you are finding that your shells are coming out kinked during the last crimping station, you may be applying more pressure than necessary for this operation. If you are sure this is not the case, then put some Vaseline on your finger and spread it around throughout the inner diameter of that die. This remedy was suggested by a customer, and while we are not completely sure why it works, it certainly seems to.

Another possibility lies in the weather. It seems that the colder it is at the loading location, the better the chance a case will kink on final crimp. This is possibly due to the plastic case being less pliable.

 June has always felt like the start of summer and that’s good but this June is going to be a little more special around here. The PGA Championship is going to be held at Erin Hills Golf Course in Erin, Wisconsin. Titan Reloading is located 8.7 miles North of the tournament. If you will be attending this major event we hope you have time to stop in and see us. Take HWY 83 north to HWY 60 and turn left (west) for 3/4 of a mile.

DILLON PRESSES

INSIGHT OF THE MONTH:

Pro 1000 Index Problem

If the Pro-1000 doesn’t index correctly there are three common problems. The first correction to try is resetting the zero adjust screw. This is behind a semi-circular cutout along the bottom edge of the shell plate carrier. Always turn the zero adjust screw clockwise to adjust. Turn until you hear the ball bearing drop into the detent of the shell plate. Once that point is achieved, turn the screw 1/2 to 3/4 further . This ensures that the shell plate stops by the ratchet under the carrier instead of the ball bearing snapping into place. If you go too far, keep turning until the next slot in the shell plate advances around to the correct position.

If the zero adjustment will not correct the problem, the next step is to replace the hex ratchet. This is the small white plastic gear located inside the shell plate carrier. The shell plate carrier must be removed to install it (there should have been two extras included with the press). You can easily see how the old one comes out in order to determine how the new one goes on.

If replacing the hex ratchet does not solve the problem, replace the drive bolt. This is the short steel bolt that holds the shell plate to the shell plate carrier and that the “actuator” rod goes through and up through the middle of the press. Replacements are available for $5 from the Lee factory. If none of these measures corrects the problem, or if you feel uncomfortable doing it yourself, return the press to the factory for repairs.

Removing Primer Pocket Crimps

All military brass and some commercial ammunition has crimped or “staked” primers. The crimp helps to hold the primer in when headspace is deliberately loose or just got that way. Military ammo can get a rough ride and anything to hold it together – from crimps to tar bullet seals – helps. This crimping process leaves a thin lip of brass displaced onto the edge of the primer to secure it in place. Before a case that has a crimped primer can be reloaded, the brass lip around the primer pocket must be removed. The old primers push out, maybe reluctantly, then the new ones don’t want to go in. So you have to get the crimp out. But how? What’s the Best way?

There are two methods of removing the crimp or opening up undersized primer pockets; Reaming and Swaging.

Reaming utilizes a cutter to remove the crimp by simply cutting it away. This requires a specially designed cutter. You can’t just use a case mouth chamfer tool … although I’ve seen it done but with poor results. It is far better to purchase a tool designed specifically for reaming primer pockets. There are many reamers available and virtually every press and die manufacturer makes one. They range from simple hand tools to elaborate motor driven units that perform multiple functions in addition to reaming the primer pocket. The singular advantage of reaming is that it can be done with a simple, inexpensive hand tool … no electricity, no press, nothing other than your hands.

Swaging re-forms the entire pocket and produces the easiest-to-insert primer experience. Swaging utilizes a hardened steel stud that is forced into the primer pocket, literally pushing the metal back and restoring the primer pocket to its original dimensions. The only downside to swaging is some setup time. There are many different swaging tools made by most reloading manufacturers. LEE COLLET DIES

Guaranteed to load the most accurate ammunition or your money back!

There is no loading system that will load more accurate ammunition than Lee Collet Dies. Lee guarantees it in writing with every set. No one but Lee has ever dared to make a guarantee like this “Smallest group size or your money back.” A collet squeezes the case neck against a precision mandrel for a perfect fit with minimum run-out. No lube case is needed. Cases last ten times longer, so the savings on only 35 cases will pay for the dies.

Maximum accuracy is usually achieved by seating the bullet out far enough to touch or almost touch the rifling. This provides the shot start pressure normally supplied by the crimp. That’s why a dead length bullet seater is included to complete the most accurate reloading system ever made. These dies size only the neck to preserve the perfect fit of fire forming. Only reload cases that have been fired in your gun.

Not recommended for autoloaders, slide or lever action guns.

Collet Die Explanation

The Collet neck sizing die is superior to the competition’s neck sizing die design because it squeezes the neck against a mandrel. This results in very uniform case mouth inner diameter, regardless of case wall thickness.

With bushing-type neck sizing dies, one has to select (and usually purchase) the appropriate bushing to get the desired case mouth inner diameter. Uniform case mouth inner diameter gives uniform bullet pull, and as you know, uniformity is what accurate ammunition is all about.

The Collet die set also includes what we call the “dead length” bullet seating die. This die is set up like a full length sizing die, in that one adjusts the die down so that the shell holder presses against the bottom of the die when the ram is at the top of its stroke. This pressure removes any clearance between the shell holder and ram, lever linkage, die threads and press frame, etc. and results in a more uniform bullet seating depth. Note that there is no provision for crimping in this die.

Collet Die Adjustment

If you are using the Collet die in an RCBS Rockchucker press, or a similar design that toggles over center at the top of the (ram) stroke, this applies far greater force than is necessary to resize just the neck of the case, and can damage the die or collapse the case. To correct this situation, adjust the die two full turns into the press after the die contacts the shell holder with the ram at the top of its stroke, rather than one as in the instructions. This will stop the press before it gets to the toggle over point. With a press without having an over center feature, apply about 25 lbs. of pressure to the handle once it bottoms out to resize the case. On most presses, this translates to over 600 lbs of pressure on the ram.

The collet might be stuck in the closed position from closing the die without a case inside. Remove the cap from the top of the Collet die and push the mandrel, collet sleeve and collet out through the top of the die. Open the collet back up with a tapered punch or Phillips screwdriver.

Collet Die Pressure Exertion

All of the sizing in the Collet die takes place at the very end of the stroke, when the ram/shell holder appears to bottom out against the base of the die. If you lean into the handle at this point, you will force the collet up into the die body, and cause the collet to squeeze the case neck down against the mandrel (the very end of which pops out the spent primer). About 25 lbs. of force is sufficient to resize most cases. If you are sitting in front of your press, just leaning your upper body weight into the lever is about right.

A good way to determine how much is necessary is to start the case into the die and feel the die remove the primer. Start using pressure and work up to what you think is about 25 lbs. Remove the case from the die and attempt to place the intended bullet in the case neck. If there is little or no resistance, repeat the process with slightly more pressure. When you have reached a point where there are vertical striation marks on the outside of the case neck or the intended bullet does not fit easily into the case neck, the correct amount of pressure has been achieved.

Understanding Firearm Headspace

Headspace is one of the most critical measurements in your firearm. The definition of headspace: the distance from the face of the locked bolt to a datum line or shoulder in the chamber that arrests the forward movement of the cartridge. The term originated when all cartridges had protruding rims, so the measure was initially taken only at the head. Now it includes other spans.

For semi-auto pistol cartridges, it’s a ridge at the front of the chamber that the mouth of the case rests on. For a rimless bottleneck rifle cartridge, that point is where the shoulder of the case rests against the shoulder of the chamber.  Rimmed cartridges like .38 Special and .45-70 are retained by the rim resting on the back of the chamber, just as belted magnum rifle cartridges “headspace” with the belt resting on a shoulder in the chamber.

When headspace is set correctly, there is a tiny bit of extra length in the chamber to accommodate the slight variations in cartridge length that occur in even the most rigorously manufactured commercial ammunition.

Why is headspace important?

When the primer ignites the powder in the cartridge, enormous pressure builds up rapidly and makes the case expand against the chamber walls to create a seal. This keeps the hot gases from escaping, except by pushing the bullet out of the case mouth and down the bore. At the same time, the base of the case also expands backward and presses against the bolt or the breech face.

Excessive headspace can lead to bulged cases or even outright failures – cracks, case head separation, and splitting of the case neck. It can also cause light primer strikes, failure to fire, primers popping out of the primer pocket, and of concern to reloaders, shortened case life. A catastrophic case failure can allow hot gas and even bits of brass to escape from the receiver and injure the shooter or bystanders.

Insufficient or excessively tight headspace can be just as dangerous. It can prevent the gun from going into battery, leading to a failure to fire or damage to the case caused by attempting to force the breech closed. Forcing the breech closed can jam the case neck too far forward, causing it to grasp the bullet too tightly, which delays the release of the bullet and leads to excessively high chamber pressures.

How it Works

Reloading with Dillon’s Square Deal B is Easy as 1-2-3!

Most shooters realize that reloading is the most economical way to enjoy their sport, but many shooters are unaware of just how simple it is to reload. In fact Dillon’s Square Deal B is one of the easiest progressive loaders in the world to learn to operate. How can we make that statement? Simple. Since all of the reloading steps are performed with a stroke of the handle, there is less to remember (or forget) than with an old-fashioned single-station press.

No Adjustments

Of all the steps in reloading, the adjustment of the reloading dies is the most critical. With the Dillon Square Deal B’s removable toolhead, your dies will stay in perfect adjustment. There’s no need to screw them in and out – even when changing calibers! The Square Deal B toolhead is held on by four allen screws. There’s less to go wrong, less to remember.

Handgun Ammunition

The Dillon Square Deal B will produce match-quality ammo for 18 pistol calibers. The Square Deal B comes complete with one caliber conversion installed on the machine.

The Basic machine includes the following:

INSIGHT OF THE MONTH:

Pro 1000 Priming

The trick to the Pro-1000 priming system is to learn to develop a “feel” through the press lever. By now you can probably tell when a primer seats correctly and when one doesn’t. If it doesn’t feel like a primer seated correctly, STOP and pull the case out! You don’t want to run a case without a primer up into the powder through expander die, because it will drop a powder charge into the case (with a hole in the bottom) and powder will leak out into the primer feed, causing problems until you clean out the spilled powder. When operating the Pro-1000, learn to slow down as you swing the lever up to the top of its stroke. As you swing the lever up, the shellplate rotates 1/3 turn, the case trips the case sensor allowing a primer to slide onto the primer pin, and at the very end of the stroke the primer pin pushes the primer into the case. If you swing the lever too hurriedly, all this happens too quickly and you will frequently get tipped primers (because the case and/or primer are not in line). Slow down a little and when you hear the “click” as the shellplate snaps into position, hesitate for just a second, and then follow through with a firm push on the press lever (primer seating depth is dependent on a firm push on the press lever). This slight hesitation allows time for the primer to slide on top of the pin, and the case to come to rest over the primer pin before being pushed up into the primer pocket. With practice you will be able to feel through the press lever what it feels like when a primer starts into the case correctly, and when it doesn’t, and will be able to take corrective steps before you get incorrectly primed cases. Often just backing up slightly (push the lever back down just a little) and then taking another swing will correct the problem and the primer will seat correctly.
