NEW 2018 DESIGN

The new design Pro 1000 has a positive index locating pin that eliminates indexing problems. It has a new low profile steel base that has been rotated for optimal ergonomics while reloading. Best of all it now has a through ram primer disposal system.

Add a bullet and pull the lever; all other operations are automatic on this progressive press. One loaded cartridge with each pull of the lever.

Full Length Sizing vs. Neck Sizing

Full length sizing dies such as the Lee Pacesetter Dies, return the entire spent cartridge to a degree that will chamber in any rifle for that caliber. Lee Dies size cases as minimally as possible while still ensuring proper chambering so that your brass is not “overworked” by the die. It is necessary to lubricate the case prior to full length sizing.

We recommend full length sizing when shooting fired brass for the first time in any rifle. It is also the preferred technique for rifles intended to be used for hunting so that rough handling of the ammunition through the magazine and chambering does not become a factor for error.

Neck sizing with Lee’s Collet Dies generally provides increased accuracy because the spent cartridge becomes “fire formed” to your specific chamber. No case lube is necessary because the die is only pressing the neck against the mandrel in the middle of the die. Neck sizing is only preferable when reloading cases that have been fired out of your rifle. They are primarily designed for accuracy when using a bolt action rifle for target use. Collet neck sizing results in cases lasting up to ten times longer without the need for trimming near as often, as when full length sizing.

The Dead Length Bullet Seater that comes with Lee’s neck sizing dies is designed for accuracy and does not crimp the case as does the seater/crimper in our Pacesetter dies. It is designed to touch the shellholder to eliminate clearance in the press for a more uniform bullet seating depth. Crimping is seldom necessary for target work.

The Ultimate Rifle 4 Die Set includes Lee’s Neck Sizing 2 Die kit along with a full length sizing die and a Factory Crimp Die. This is because you may obtain brass that has not been fired in your rifle and it allows you to prepare the case for its first firing in your rifle. Remember, it is necessary to lubricate the case for the full length sizing die only. After your first firing only the collet sizing die is required.

Unsupported Chamber Warning

We do not recommend “fixing” cases fired in pistols with unsupported chambers, because there is no way to make them safe once they have bulged. The case wall is thinned where it bulges, and resizing the outside of the case back down to the correct diameter does not restore the case back to its original thickness.

If this case is fired in a pistol with an unsupported chamber again, and this thinned section of brass happens to line up with the unsupported part of the chamber, there is a high probability that the case will rupture.

Pacesetter 3 Die Set

Use these dies if you want to produce factory dimensioned ammo that reliably fits and feeds in any gun. They are the first choice for semi-auto actions. Full-length sizing is a must if you are reloading for more than one firearm or reloading cases that were fired in others firearms. Includes a full length sizing die, bullet seating die, factory crimp die, shell holder, powder dipper and load data. This set is recommended for assembling ammunition for hunting purposes as the finished rounds chamber easily and can withstand rough handling of the firearm action.

Pacesetter 2 Die Set

Collet Die Set

Use these dies for best accuracy, longest case life and no resizing lubricant. Only the neck of the case is resized the body is untouched so it retains the perfect fit to your guns chamber. These dies are the favorite of the bench rest crowd as there is no other die that can produce a more accurate cartridge. This set is designed for assembling the most accurate ammunition but is not recommended for hunting rounds as the case is neck sized only and the bullet is not crimped in the case.

This is essentially a Collet die set with the addition of the steel full length sizing die and factory crimp die so that one can prepare newly acquired cases for the first firing in the rifle.

Comes as a standard two die rifle set that contains a full length sizing die and a bullet seater die. This set is designed to meet a tight budget and contains only the dies.

This month I would like to point out a few features on our website that will help you navigate quickly to the products you’re looking for and also calculate the shipping costs for an order.

The first feature is the “Search” engine located on the upper right corner of the website. With this tool you can search for a Lee part number which will result in the item’s listing appearing below the “Search Criteria” for selection. Click on the listing picture to go directly to the listing for ordering. If you are not sure what the part number is you can also search by item name (i.e. powder funnel, dies etc.) and then scroll through the items that appear on the lower portion of the page for selection. When you search for an item name everything related to that product will appear. A great way to narrow down the results is to type in a caliber (i.e. 223, 30/06, 45 ACP etc.) which will produce all the items related to the caliber. Be sure to select “All Categories” in the field below “Keywords” so the whole website will be searched.

The second feature is the “Site Map” located at the bottom of the “Information” area on the left side of the website. The Site Map shows the category structure of our website on one page and allows you to go directly to any category on the site with one click of the mouse. Most of the RED text on our website (except page titles) are actually links that when “Clicked On” go directly to the subject of the text.

The third feature is the “Shipping Estimator” located on the right side of the website below the “Search” and “Shopping Cart”. Add all the items you want to order into the shopping cart and then, rather than going to checkout, select your Country, State/Region and Postal Code in the shipping estimator and click “Estimate”. This will return the cost of shipping and the results are displayed directly below the Shipping Estimator. Depending on the size of your screen, you may have to scroll down to see these results. If you are logged into your account you must clear the shopping cart if you choose not to order. If you are not logged into an account you can simply abandon the shopping cart and all will be cleared.

The final feature is for the many friends we have made all over the world. Located directly below the Shipping Estimator on the right side of the website is a “Translator”. With this tool you can select from many languages and convert the entire website to that language.

First Impressions of the
AUTO BREECH LOCK PRO

We now have the new Lee Auto Breech Lock Pro setup in our showroom. I set the press up for .40 S&W and I am impressed. You can use it with just a shell plate and a set of dies but you can also automate the case feed, the primer feed, the bullet feed and add a powder measure. It is a true progressive press, or not if you so choose. It uses the Safety Primer Feed so there is one manual operation to insert the primer into the priming cup. This press is much like the Pro 1000 with an added hole for a Factory Crimp Die. The dies mount into the press using the Quick Change bushings used in the single station Breech Lock presses. Like the Pro 1000 it has an overall length limit of 2.30″ when using the auto-index action rod. By removing the action rod it can reload most longer calibers like .30/06. Not having auto-indexing engaged makes the press as efficient as the much more expensive Dillon 550 press. The setup and use of this press is easy. I think Lee has a winner here.

INSIGHT OF THE MONTH:

Crushed Cases

While there can be many reasons for a case to be crushed in the reloading process, there are primarily two.

The first is that the bullet seating die is not set properly. If the crimp shoulder is set too deeply, the case is crimped before the bottom of the press stroke is achieved. Once the bullet is seated, additional pressure pushes the already heavily crimped case into the die further resulting in a crushed case. This is a common occurrence with thin and long case necks such as the 30-30 Winchester.

The trick is to set the bullet seating depth first, then the crimp. This is done as follows; With an empty, sized case in the shell holder, hold the ram at the top of its stroke. Turn the bullet seating die body down over the case until you feel it come to a stop. This will be when the case mouth contacts the crimp shoulder inside the die. Mark this position by turning the lock ring down against the turret or press frame. Now adjust your bullet seating depth. Once you have the bullet seated to the desired depth, back the bullet seater adjuster out about 1 turn. Now turn the bullet seating die body in to apply the desired crimp. Once this is established, hold the ram at the top of its stroke and spin the bullet seater adjuster down until it stops.

It is a good idea to carry this out with an empty case, so that after you have seated the bullet, you have a perfectly safe “dummy” cartridge (or gauge) to repetitively set seating depth and crimp on future occasions. Once you have this “dummy” gauge, all you have to do is place it in the shell holder, raise the ram to the top of its stroke, turn the bullet seating body down until it stops, and then turn the bullet seating depth adjuster in until it stops. Since the crimp and the seating depth were already set, the die will return to very close to the same settings.

The second reason is generally associated with the collet dies. If the collet in the die has been collapsed, the case neck can not clearly enter the collet area. This results in a crushed and / or buckled case. This can be avoided by not operating the die without a case in it. If this happens, it is necessary to remove the collet and pry the collet leaves back so that they stay apart when inserted back into the die. The ID of the die body will cause the leaves to stay uniformly apart.

Concentricity

When making loads for precision shooting, hand loaders want to remove as much inconsistency as possible. We go through steps such as weighing every charge, keeping brass separated by times fired, and ensuring there is as small a variation in projectiles as possible. Even when these and other steps are followed, even when we take every care to be consistent with our reloading process, there is another issue that can arise. Concentricity.

Concentricity, in layman’s terms, is how symmetrical the case and bullet are along a line that would follow the center of the cartridge. The goal in measuring concentricity is to ensure that the bullet is perfectly in line with your rifle’s bore. Some shooters may argue they have never measured concentricity and their bullets fire just fine. That may be true. The bore and barrel are more than capable of changing the movement of the bullet so that it leaves the barrel. But if the bullet is way out of concentricity two issues may arise. First, it is unlikely that the bore was able to fix the bullet’s path in such a way that would be consistent with every other round you fire. Secondly, since the bullet was forced into the correct path, it most likely received undue stress or damage. Both of these factors can cause your loads to have lessened accuracy.

It is for this reason many precision shooters will use concentricity tools. These tools help identify if your bullet isn’t being held in such a way that is concentric to the rest of the cartridge. One option available is the Hornady Concentricity tool. This tool has an adjustable universal style shell holder and spring loaded bullet steading device that fits cartridges from .22 to .45 caliber. Those two items hold the cartridge steady so that as you roll it, the measuring gauge can show you any variation in the bullet’s concentricity. After you have identified the bullet runout, there is a screw with a rubber end that can be used to correct the bullet, ensuring concentricity.

Load Master Carrier Indexing Adjustment

There are two common causes for the Load Master to not index correctly. The easiest to check is the case ejector. This is a chrome plated part just under the black knurled nut that holds down the shell plate. There is a “tail” on the case ejector that prevents the shell plate from turning clockwise as the indexer is pulled out of the shell plate carrier. Make sure the end of this tail is bent down so that it drops into the holes in the top of the shell plate (if it doesn’t, bend it with a needle nose pliers). It is important that when placed onto the square fitting on the carrier, that the case ejector not be able to move at all in a rotary manner. If it does, this would allow the shell plate to move in a clockwise manner which will cause index problems.

The other is carrier misalignment. Sometimes a difficult index causes the whole shell plate carrier to rotate on the end of the ram, rather than just the shell plate. This pulls the indexer away from the ramps cast into the frame that normally operate the indexer. The fix is outlined on the last page of the instructions, under “Alignment of the Carrier to the Turret”. Basically what you are doing is loosening the carrier on the ram so that you can turn it clockwise (looking down from the top of the press) a degree or so, to bring the indexer closer to the frame.

While the directions contain more detail, loosen the draw bolt on the bottom of the ram of the press until the carrier is loose. Raise the ram to a point that the round portion of the flipper on the end of the index rod is against the protruded rib on the frame of the press. Ensure that the index rod is in towards the carrier as far as it will go.

From the front facing the press, pull slightly on the case feed ramp so that the round part of the flipper on the index rod is flush with protruding rib on the press frame. Holding the carrier in place, re-tighten the draw bolt to about twelve pounds of pressure. This means using about twelve pounds of pressure at the end of the handle of a one foot socket wrench or about twenty five pounds with a six inch socket wrench. It is important to hold the carrier tightly in place while tightening the draw bolt, if not done, the carrier will move counter-clockwise under the torque of tightening the draw bolt.

Mini Mr.Bulletfeeder
by Double Alpha

The Mini Mr.Bulletfeeder by DAA uses a 6-tube magazine system which holds roughly 100 bullets. It feeds into the same brilliantly reliable dropper die assembly as used on the Mr.Bulletfeeder.

Using a Mr.Bulletfeeder while reloading is a real pleasure. It makes the reloading process faster and much easier. If you have never used one, you are missing out on one of the greatest reloading assists out there! A Bulletfeeder also improves safety, by preventing the need to insert your fingers under the tool head to place your bullets on the brass. Everyone should use one!

The problem of course, is cost. Shooting is expensive, and reloading ammo, while usually cheaper than shooting factory, is not as cheap as it once was…
You need to buy a press, other reloading accessories, not to mention ammo components. For many, by the time all that is purchased, they have stretched their budget about as far as it will go. And the Bulletfeeder gets passed on, for lack of funds.

This was Double Alpha’s motivation when setting out to develop a less expensive version of the Mr.Bulletfeeder, and it lead to the new Mini Mr.Bulletfeeder.

Each magazine of bullet tubes needs to be filled by hand before reloading, much in the same way you would fill your primer tubes before starting your reloading session. With a little practice, it will take you about 2 minutes to fill the tube assembly. And this can be done in advance while watching TV in the comfort of your living room. Additional tube assemblies can be purchases separately (or as a bundle), thus allowing you to pre-load 300, 400 or more bullets before starting your reloading session.

While reloading, you will see the bullets drop down in the transparent tube, as they feed into the dropper-die assembly. Once a tube is empty, you simply rotate and click the next tube into place and keep reloading. Transition to the next tube takes just a second or two. Once the entire 6-tube magazine is empty, either reload it by hand, or drop your 2nd assembly into place to continue without delay.

The Mini Mr.Bulletfeeder can be used on any progressive reloading machine which uses the same size dies as Dillon, however please note that the powder funnel we supply with the unit is designed to be used only in the Dillon powder drop! If you wish to use the Mini Mr.Bulletfeeder with another press, you may need to get another powder funnel to expand the brass. Be aware that the bullet feeder does require a station in your tool head, directly after the powder dropper.

Double Alpha has found it is difficult to use the Mini Mr.Bulletfeeder on a 1050 when a powder check is being used in the following station. This has to do with the angle in which the powder dropper sits, forcing the bullet dropper to rotate further away, over the next station. This is an issue only on a 1050.

These quality stainless steel dies, enable you to Seat and Crimp in one station, without compromising the quality of your ammo. It may take a little longer to get the adjustments just right, but once calibrated correctly, this die will produce consistent and precise quality ammunition.

These dies include an O-ring lock machined into the nut, which allows you to hand tighten only – and the die stays put! They include a finger adjustable floating bullet Seater, are heat treated to ideal hardness and polished to the smoothest finish.

Crushed Cases

While there can be many reasons for a case to be crushed in the reloading process, there are primarily two.

The first is that the bullet seating die is not set properly. If the crimp shoulder is set too deeply, the case is crimped before the bottom of the press stroke is achieved. Once the bullet is seated, additional pressure pushes the already heavily crimped case into the die further resulting in a crushed case. This is a common occurrence with thin and long case necks such as the 30-30 Winchester or long pistol rounds such as the .357 Magnum. Be sure to set the die per instructions.

This is a clever way to set the Bullet Seating Die quickly. The trick is to set the bullet seating depth first, then the crimp. This is done as follows; With an empty, sized case in the shell holder, hold the ram at the top of its stroke. Turn the bullet seating die body down over the case until you feel it come to a stop. This will be when the case mouth contacts the crimp shoulder inside the die. Mark this position by turning the lock ring down against the turret or press frame. Now adjust your bullet seating depth. Once you have the bullet seated to the desired depth, back the bullet seater adjuster out about 1 turn. Now turn the bullet seating die body in to apply the desired crimp. Once this is established, hold the ram at the top of its stroke and spin the bullet seater adjuster down until it stops. It is a good idea to carry this out with an empty case, so that after you have seated the bullet, you have a perfectly safe dummy cartridge (or gauge) to repetitively set seating depth and crimp on future occasions. Once you have this dummy gauge, all you have to do is place it in the shell holder, raise the ram to the top of its stroke, turn the bullet seating body down until it stops, and then turn the bullet seating depth adjuster in until it stops. Since the crimp and the seating depth were already set, the die will return to very close to the same settings.

The second reason is generally associated with the Lee Collet Dies. If the collet in the die has been collapsed, the case neck can not clearly enter the collet area. This results in a crushed and/or buckled case. This can be avoided by not operating the die without a case in it. If this happens, it is necessary to remove the collet and pry the collet leaves back so that they stay apart when inserted back into the die. The ID of the die body will cause the leaves to stay uniformity apart.

Turret Press Indexing Explained

The square ratchet is both free to rotate inside the clamp and held fast by the clamp, depending on which direction the ram is moving.  If you are lowering the press lever (raising the ram) you don’t want the turret to rotate, so the square ratchet must be free to rotate inside the clamp.  The friction between the square ratchet and the index rod causes the square ratchet to slide down to the bottom of the cavity inside the clamp, where it is free to rotate when it passes over the twist in the index rod.  On the upswing of the press lever (as the ram goes down) the drag between the square ratchet and index rod causes the square ratchet to slide up to the top of the cavity inside the clamp, where the square ratchet fits into matching notches in the clamp which prevent the square ratchet from turning, so as it passes the twist in the index rod it turns the turret.

Included with the Deluxe and Classic Turret Presses is a spare black nylon ratchet. This installs inside the black auto index clamp on the steel ram. The square black ratchet rides on the 1/4″x 1/4″ steel index rod. When removing the aluminum turret, be sure to raise the ram to disengage the square ratchet from the twisted part of the rod.

The nylon square ratchet that comes with the turret press is designed to properly index the press for 10s of thousands of rounds; however, an extra does comes with the press. This inexpensive part is made of nylon for two reasons with the first being that if the index rod is operated against the proper rotation, the nylon will fail before any damage occurs to any other part. The second is that they are inexpensive to produce and purchase.

The ratchet enables the indexing without “tweaking” or adjustment. The index rod may be removed and replaced at will without affecting the timing of the press. In the unlikely event that your press was received and not indexing correctly, the ratchet is not the reason and the issue is easily resolved by turret press index alignment.

The only reason the ratchet would be damaged is from forcing the index rod against that ratchet. This generally occurs when turrets are removed with the ram at the bottom of the stroke as the ratchet is engaged during the down stroke. When removing turrets, it is necessary to raise the ram about an inch or so.

A problem can ultimately affect indexing if the ratchet is excessively forced against the index rod, because the top portion of the ram, designed to rotate for another reason, would do so under these circumstances. Then, even with the ratchet replaced, the entire housing is off center. The proper alignment of the housing is completed by using the lever portion of the priming arm and aligning it with the two bumps on the base of the press

The nylon housing that holds the ratchet never needs to be opened other than to eventually replace the nylon ratchet. Remove the index rod, then the housing by removing the horizontal screw. Replace the ratchet remembering to place the flange in the downward position and reattach the nylon housing. This housing does nothing more than contain the ratchet. Do not over tighten the screw because the threads can be stripped.
