Headspace is one of the most critical measures in your firearm. A quick definition: the distance from the face of the locked bolt to a datum line or shoulder in the chamber that arrests the forward movement of the cartridge. The term originated when all cartridges had protruding rims, so the measure was initially taken only at the head. Now it includes other spans.

Headspace is measured from the bolt-face to the mouth of a straight rimless hull like the .45 ACP, whose mouth stops against a small, abrupt shoulder at the front of the chamber. In a belted magnum, the stop is the leading edge of the belt, in the back of the chamber. On a .30-30 case it’s the front of the rim. The datum line for rimless or rebated bottleneck rounds like the .270 and .284 lies on the shoulder. Semi-rimmed cartridges theoretically headspace on the rim, but sometimes (as with the .38 Super Automatic) the rim protrusion is insufficient for sure function. The case mouth then serves as a secondary stop. The semi-rimmed .220 Swift has a more substantial lip; but most handloaders prefer to neck-size the Swift, so after a first firing, the case actually headspaces on its shoulder.

If there’s too little headspace, the bolt won’t close on a chambered round. Too much headspace can shorten case life, even cause case ruptures and dangerous gas escape.

When you pull the trigger, many events follow. The blow to the primer crushes shock-sensitive priming mix, which detonates. The explosion shoots flame through the flash-hole in the primer pocket, igniting the gunpowder. The resulting gas expands rapidly, stretching the ductile brass case. The thin case wall up front is ironed against the chamber wall, but the solid rear section around the primer pocket stays close to its original diameter, slightly smaller than the chamber. Gas pressure shoves it back against the bolt face. Still expanding, the gas thrusts the bullet out of the case.

Because cartridges vary slightly in dimensions, and each must chamber easily, the chamber must be a tad bigger than the average case. If there’s too much distance between the bolt face and the point in the chamber that stops the forward motion of a cartridge, however, you have excess headspace.

Until the thick case head moves rearward to meet the bolt face, the bolt face isn’t supporting it. The striker has pushed the case to its forward stop. Excess headspace causes excessive stretching. After repeated firings, the “work hardened” case becomes brittle as well as thinner just ahead of the web. It no longer stretches easily and can crack at the web, or even separate.

A cracked case is dangerous because it spills powder gas into the chamber. That gas jets through the tiniest corridors at velocities that can exceed bullet speed. It may scoot along the bolt race, through the striker hole, into the magazine well. It can find your eye faster than you can blink.

Gunsmiths measure headspace with “go” and “no go” gauges. The “go” gauge is typically .004 to .006 shorter than the “no go” gauge for rimless and belted cartridges. The bolt should close on a “go” gauge but not on a “no go” gauge. Theoretically, if the bolt closes on a “no go” gauge, the barrel should be set back a thread and rechambered to achieve proper headspace. However, many chambers that accept “no go” gauges are still safe to shoot. The “field” gauge, seldom seen now, has been used to check these (mostly military) chambers. It’s roughly .002 longer than a “no go” gauge.

Minimum and maximum headspace measurements are not the same as corresponding minimum and maximum case dimensions. For example, a .30-06 chamber should measure between 1.940 and 1.946, bolt face to shoulder datum line. A .30-06 cartridge usually falls between 1.934 and 1.940. Case gauges perform the same check on cartridges that headspace gauges do in chambers.

An obvious difference: case gauges are female and don’t indicate headspace. They simply show whether a cartridge will chamber in a rifle that’s correctly barreled. Headspace is a steel-to-steel measure. Altering case dimensions changes the relationship of the cartridge to the chamber. Reducing head-to-datum line length of the round can result in a condition of excess headspace, even if the firearm checks out perfectly.

PROPER POWDER STORAGE

Some years ago I read an article by Charles “Skeeter” Skelton, the handgun editor of Shooting Times magazine. He told a story of how he had loaded up what he called “stout” loads for a friend. The friend tried to shoot a range bull that was down and needed to be killed. The rounds went “poop” and bounced off the bull’s skull at point blank range. Skeeter went back and checked his powder measure which had been left with the powder in it for quite some time prior to cooking up the loads. When he dumped the powder out he found lots of it adhering, actually melted into the plastic hopper. He realized that the chemical reaction between the powder and the plastic hopper caused degradation of the powder. He was correct as this is the first reasons you should empty the powder back into the bottle after a reloading session.

When I first started reloading, I recall reading from loading manuals of the day that there were a number possible problems from leaving powder in the hopper.

1. Powder attacking the plastic hopper and degrading the powder as in the previous story. Nitrocellulose powders are extruded thru use of a solvent, Acetone mainly, to soften it and make it plastic for processing it. Acetone can melt or soften polystyrene plastics. Nitroglycerine-augmented nitrocellulose powders (double-base) involve even more solvents to introduce the EXTRA nitro into the guncotton.

2. Confusion later as to which powder is in the hopper leading to using the wrong amount/weight of powder in a load.

3. Powder being adversely affected by UV light (from a window or fluorescent lights), leading to decomposition or change in burning rate. Powder comes in opaque cans for a reason, powder will degrade in light over time.

4. Degradation of the powder from exposure to humidity because a hopper will not seal as well as the powder bottle or jug. Smokeless powder is hydrophilic (it will absorb humidity from the air) and when it absorbs water, it swells and this will change the burning characteristics of the powder. Only the top half inch or so will swell like this. This makes any later charges thrown from that powder less powerful than the first charges thrown from dry powder, but not consistently so. Most basement reloading rooms have higher humidity than any other room in the house (excepting the bathroom). The manufacturers go to great pains to maintain consistent moisture levels for every batch they make. For that reason alone you should store your powder in a tightly sealed original can after each loading session.

I highly recommend using the proper powder storage procedures and as a final point of emphasis is the following statement found on the Hodgdon’s reloading data website: “Powder left in the reloader’s powder measure hoppers for extended periods, overnight or several days, should be avoided. Powder needs to be stored in original containers ONLY, when not in use. Numerous modern smokeless powders are double base in construction, containing both Nitrocellulose and Nitroglycerine.”

Which Lee Reloading Press should I get?

This is by far the most commonly asked question with regard to the Lee Precision line of reloading presses. The answer is dependent on the type of reloading you intend to do, be it rifle cartridges, pistol cartridges or both and the amount of ammo you need to reload.

There are three basic styles of press. These are the Single Station Press, the Turret Press and the Progressive Press in their order of efficiency.

With a single station press you perform the reloading steps in batches as shown in our “Reloading Made Easy” article. It is a slower method but produces the same quality reloads as any other method. With this press you can reload 40-60 rounds an hour.

The next in the line of efficiency is the Turret Press where 3 or 4 dies (depending on the model) rotate above a single shell case in the ram of the press, hence, you must pull the press lever 3-4 times to get one complete round. The Value Turret Press is ideal for handgun loading and with experienced hands, you can load over 200 rounds per hour. For those who wish to use the press as a single station press or to reload rifle calibers with an overall length of more than 2.312″ long, the auto index feature can be disabled in seconds and then re-enabled in the same amount of time. The Classic Cast Turret Press is a larger version and allows you to reload rifle calibers of up to 3.060″ long before you must disengage the auto index feature.

The most efficient press to reload ammo is the Progressive style. Here you have 3 or 5 dies (depending on the model) stationary above 3 or 5 shell cases that rotate around under the dies. Every time you pull the press lever there are 3-5 operations happening at once, hence, you get one finished round with every one pull of the lever. Lee offers three fine progressive presses, the Pro 1000, the Load Master and the new Auto Breech Lock Pro. With a progressive type press you will reload 400+ rounds an hour.

The Pro 1000 is a 3 station progressive press primarily designed for pistol cartridges but also can load smaller rifle calibers like the .223 Rem and .30 M-1. The overhead clearance is limited to 2.312″ overall cartridge length because anything longer will have the bullet still in the die when the carrier rotates.

The Load Master is a 5 station progressive press that is designed to handle rifle and pistol cartridges with equal ease. It is stronger and has more overhead clearance to accommodate the larger rifle calibers.

Both progressive presses include auto indexing, automatic primer feed and case feed, and can be fitted with an automatic bullet feeder. Both can be purchased completely set up with everything you need to load your desired caliber. Those who want to load rifle or use the Lee Carbide Factory Crimp dies for handgun loading choose the Load Master.

The new Auto Breech Lock Pro is a 4 station progressive press that uses the manual Safety Prime on the press to handle priming. All other functions are the same as the Pro 1000 and Load Master.

Caliber changes for the Turret Press and the two Progressive Presses can be done in less than five minutes and there are extra turrets available so you don’t have to readjust your dies once they are set, simply change the turret.

Choosing a Powder for a New Cartridge

You just purchased your new hunting rifle in a cartridge where you have no loading experience. What powder do you choose? When you look at reload data, the list of powders is usually long, and any one of them might work great. But here is the trick to hone in quickly on the ones that may work best.

First, choose the bullet for your intended use. Review the reload data to find the velocity level you wish to achieve. As you look at the powder charges, chances are very good one of the powders that meets your velocity criteria shows a “C” beside the maximum charge and/or gives one of the highest velocities. The “C” means a lightly compressed charge of powder. That is an ideal situation, as maximum or near maximum charge weights that yield from 95% to 103% load density tend to give the most uniform velocities, as well as top accuracy.

I’ve yet to see a benchrest shooter whose load does not completely fill the case, as well as give top velocity. The same holds true for a varmint shooter, case full or darn close to it. Along with that particular powder, the powders listed closest to it on either side will likely be in that 95% to 103% range as well. This is a great place to start. Simply start with the beginning load for that combination and carefully work your way into the maximum, at all times watching for case head pressure signs. You can save a lot of shooting by carefully going up in 1/2-grain increments at a time (in mid- to large-capacity cases). Fire only two rounds of each charge level, each pair at a different target. Shoot slow enough to not overheat the barrel. Some of these two-shot groups will show a willingness to group closely. When you find shots that group tightest, load several rounds and then shoot five-shot groups for verification.

I do not have one rifle that doesn’t group the best somewhere near the max load. Should this not provide the accuracy required, either change primer brands and repeat or try one of the powders on either side of the one you just tested. Chances are very good one of these will lead you to a load that meets your expectations.

The Impact of Barrel Twist Rates on Bullets

There has been much study and commentary on twist rates regarding how they affect the flight of a bullet in handguns, rifles and other single-projectile launchers. Similarly, there are some guidelines with which to work on this subject, but there are many variables to these guidelines that have to be considered, as well—too many to discuss in the space available. I can, however, cover a few to answer the majority of your interests.

Twist rate and velocity have a major impact on the stability, accuracy and flight integrity of a bullet, but, consider the following. The design of the bullet, for example, will dictate the rpm it will withstand when it is fired. Some bullets have thin jackets designed to disrupt quickly on impact such as those designed for hunting varmints. Match bullets, in order to maximize weight in a certain-size envelope, may also have thin jackets because lead is heavier than copper. The stress on the jacket material when fired in deep-grooved or rough barrels with sharp-edged lands is enough to weaken the jacket to the point of separation soon after it leaves the barrel in some cases. Once the core loses the support of the jacket, it also disintegrates due to the centrifugal forces imparted by the rpm of the bullet, often resulting in a small cloud of dust between the muzzle and the target. This usually happens within the first 50 yards of flight, which is just milliseconds out of the muzzle. I have yet to see a bullet hold together for a second or more and then come apart in flight. I suppose it could happen, but it is unlikely in my opinion.

Generally speaking, it would be difficult to drive a bullet fast enough to the point of disintegration out of a short-barreled rifle or AR pistol in the calibers these firearms are typically chambered in, even with a tight twist rate. Usually the culprit of bullet disintegration in these guns is related to the bore or an attached muzzle device. I have seen this to be the case when the muzzle device was not attached in perfect alignment with the bore, causing a disruption in the bullet as it exited the muzzle.

Bullet manufacturers often recommend twist rates for bullet stability on the containers they are sold in, particularly in the heavy range for a given caliber, assuming they are shot at velocities commensurate with their intended purpose. Often, they will advise (if contacted by the customer) an rpm range for optimum stability and integrity for a particular bullet. Using the formula of known muzzle velocity multiplied by 720, then divided by the measured twist rate in inches, will determine what characteristics the bullet should possess for optimum performance in any gun—providing the barrel is in good shape and the bullet isn’t damaged in the feeding and chambering process or by a muzzle attachment.

Keep in mind that ballistics is not an exact science. There are guidelines and so-called rules to go by, but there are many exceptions that have to be considered. The best way to achieve success is to stay within the recommended guidelines offered by the industry and experts regarding bullets and their capabilities. There is certainly nothing wrong with experimenting outside of the box as long as safety is not compromised. You won’t know what works in your guns and what doesn’t unless you give it a try.

Smokeless Powder

Perhaps the most important decision in reloading is which powder to choose. I will avoid using the term “gunpowder,” as the purists out there will point out that this term should be reserved for what is usually referred to as black powder, the original gunpowder.

Modern cartridge based firearms use so-called “smokeless” powder as the propellant, so that is what I will be discussing.

Powder Composition

Modern smokeless powders are composed of one or more basic explosive compounds. Single base powders utilize nitrocellulose, double base powders use nitrocellulose and nitroglycerin and triple base powders use nitrocellulose, nitroglycerin and nitroguanidine. Single base powders tend to deteriorate quicker as they are hygroscopic, that is they absorb moisture and break down. Whilst single base powders are still commonly available, the benefits of double base powders make them attractive to reloaders due to their superior storage capabilities. Unless you are planning on reloading 5” naval shells, you are unlikely to need a triple based powder.

Various additional compounds are added to the base compounds to control burn rates, slow degradation and reduce flash, among other characteristics.

Physical Nature of Powders

Smokeless powder may be produced in several physical forms. These may be small balls, flakes or extruded rods. The various physical forms are designed to provide different burn rates, with ball powders generally burning fastest, then flake powders and finally rod powders, although the additives in a specific powder may change this somewhat.

Fast burning powders produce a quick snappy load which may be suitable for short barrel firearms such as handguns. Slower powders are often used for long arms, particularly those of large calibre. Gas operated firearms need more gas to operate, which may mean a slower burning powder. The moral of the story, all powders are different, and each has its uses.

Choosing a Powder

A quick check of the Internet indicates that there are several hundred smokeless powders commonly available. Most industrialized countries seem to have some capability to produce their own propellant powders. Selecting a powder manufactured in your own country will most likely improve availability and reduce cost.

The best place to start is with a good set of reloading tables or a projectile/powder manufacturer’s data.

There will probably be several powders from each manufacturer which are suitable for a specific application. The final choice is most likely to be dictated by:
1. Caliber and type of firearm.
2. Specific projectile to be used.
3.Price.
4. Availability.

If you are reloading for several different calibers and/or projectile types, it may be prudent, although not always possible, to select a powder that suits all your loads. This will reduce the likelihood of inadvertently using the incorrect powder in a specific load or accidentally mixing powders together. Utilizing one powder also means you can purchase larger quantities of a single type of powder, which has economic advantages.

In practice, enter your reloading data with the specific caliber to be reloaded. Select a load “recipe,” which covers the projectile type/weight you are planning on using, and, if possible, choose one with a powder which is readily available and of an acceptable cost. It may be necessary to research numerous reloading sources in order to get the best combination of powder and projectile type/weight.

How To Use A Burn-Rate Chart

There are more than a hundred different propellants readily available for just about any application one could imagine. If you don’t believe me, take a look at the burn-rate chart on page 2. So how do you select the best one from so many choices?

Well, I’m not aware of an obvious or precise method, but experienced handloaders know that a propellant’s burn rate significantly affects cartridge performance. We also know that other factors also affect how fast or slow the burn rate is manifested in a specific cartridge/bullet/powder/primer combination.

Generally, there are two types of propellant chemistry available to handloaders. Single-base powders contain primarily nitrocellulose with various coatings added to enhance stability and control muzzle flash and burn rate, etc. For example, most IMR and Hodgdon cylindrical or stick propellants are single-base.

Double-base propellant is comprised mostly of nitrocellulose but also has another potent ingredient (nitroglycerine) added to increase the available energy. While most double-base propellants are spherical (ball) or flake powders, other brands offer double-base cylindrical powders.

As you might expect, the physical shape of each propellant granule significantly affects its burn rate. Stick propellants may be short and relatively fat or long and skinny, while others are both long and large in diameter. If you examine them closely, you’ll see one or more perforation extending through each granule. On the other hand, ball powders can look like miniature, uniformly sized ball bearings or a mix of larger- and smaller-diameter granules, some of which are almost round, and others are flattened or even irregularly shaped. Flake powder is typically coarsely cut and bulky (i.e., less dense) compared to stick or ball propellants.

Burn rate is significantly affected by the granules’ total surface area exposed to the initial primer flash. In addition, propellants are typically coated with chemical deterrents to delay–as the term suggests–and control burn rate. Therefore, for equal powder-charge weights, there is more or less surface area to ignite, depending on the quantity and configuration of the powder granules.

Typically, the maximum surface area exists at ignition, and it decreases during the few milliseconds the propellant burns. That’s why the chamber pressure peaks almost immediately and then drops off rapidly. But other nonpropellant factors interact to determine a specific propellant’s relative burn rate. These include case capacity and shape, expansion ratio (i.e., the bore volume compared to the chamber volume), bullet construction and weight, the specific industry pressure standards, primer brisance, and so on.

Large-capacity, magnum-rifle cartridges yield maximum velocities and energy with heavy charge weights of relatively slow-burn-rate powder. My .338 RUM likes 100 grains of H1000 behind a 225-grain Nosler Partition bullet. It takes a Large Rifle Magnum primer to reliably light this much powder.

At the other end of the cartridge scale, 2.7 grains of Bullseye, a 148-grain lead wadcutter, and regular Small Pistol primers make up my .38 Special target ammo. For this application, the light charge of fast propellant provides excellent results.

Second only to safety, achieving the desired performance from your handloads is the key objective. The .38 Spl. is a poor choice for shooting elk across a windy canyon. And punching holes in paper targets at 7 yards with the .338 RUM at the local shooting range is quite over the top.

Light charge weights of fast-burn-rate propellants are loaded in small, lower-pressure, straight-walled cartridges. Heavy charges of slow powder go in large, bottlenecked, higher-pressure rounds. As the cartridge capacity increases and/or the SAAMI pressure limits increase, the best propellant will typically exhibit a relatively slower burn rate.

So much for facts and theory. Let’s get practical.

Hodgdon surplus 4831 cost about a dollar a pound when I first began reloading about 38 years ago. H4831 is listed at the slow end of the burn-rate chart. It’s most suited for full-case charges in the .270 Win., 7mm Rem. Mag., .30-06, or .300 Win. Mag. with medium- to heavy-weight bullets. But will it perform safely and reliably in smaller- capacity cartridges, such as the .308 Win., 7mm Mauser, or .244 Rem. cartridges?

The answer is a qualified, “Maybe.” So will most small-arms propellants–some better than others, of course. It all depends on what your success criteria are. If each bullet always strikes the target exactly in the same place, the benchrest competitor will be ecstatic. If the same load/firearm is used for hunting or law enforcement and the game or bad guy is not immediately incapacitated, then the responsible sportsman or police officer will definitely not be happy.

Ideally, you want to achieve maximum loading density with a propellant that launches the bullet to the highest velocity without exceeding the industry-specified maximum average pressure (MAP) and also delivers the desired accuracy. Loads that almost fill or even slightly overfill the case (i.e., typically not more than 5 percent compression) and achieve near maximum MAP are considered to be the most efficient. That’s from an internal ballistics perspective, of course.

If a specific combination of components doesn’t produce the external and/or terminal ballistics performance you desire, then it’s practically worthless. That’s when reviewing and comparing the various burn-rate charts can fit into the overall scheme of handloading.

Let’s say you tried a specific powder, primer, case, and bullet combination, but it just didn’t deliver the accuracy, velocity, etc., you want. The burn-rate charts will indicate other candidate propellants that are ranked close to the one you’ve already tried, and one of them may achieve satisfactory performance. However, you still must research other sources to determine safe reloading recipes using the alternate powders.

A stern word of caution: Never use a burn-rate chart to select another propellant and then simply duplicate the charge weights of one you’ve already tried.

If you unilaterally plug and play a substitute powder, you can damage the firearm, and you may be seriously injured or killed. Practically speaking, burn-rate charts are only comparative guides to help you develop alternative handloads while searching for the right load that delivers the best performance in your gun.

Quick Guide to Bullet Weight Selection

Here are a few (very) rough guidelines for choosing the right bullet weight.

Plinking:
Bullet weight doesn’t matter much for casual plinking. Just buy whatever ammo is cheapest and functions well in your gun.

Shooting for Maximum Accuracy:
Bullet weight can play a huge role in accuracy for a couple of reasons. First, sometimes a specific gun just “likes” bullets of one weight over others. The precise reasons are not always easily explained, but with some experimentation, you might find, for example, that your particular Glock 22 is always a little more accurate with 180-grain .40 S&W loads than 165-grain loads. You might be able to pick up some hints about good loads from other people who have a lot of trigger time with the same gun, but sometimes trial and error might be the only way to figure it out.

For long range rifle shooting, the tie between bullet weight and accuracy is less mysterious, but still potentially confusing. Heavier bullets are less susceptible to being blown off course by the wind, but if the bullet is too heavy, it might not have enough velocity to remain stable at the desired distances.

The best bullet weight to optimize the balance for maximum accuracy will also depend on barrel length, twist rate, and a ton of other factors that we can’t cover here. If you’re serious about pursuing pinpoint accuracy, just ask a long range shooting enthusiast for help and they’ll be more than happy to bore you to tears enlighten you with all the exciting details.

Self-Defense and Hunting:
This is a tricky one. Bullet weight is just one of many factors that determine a load’s effectiveness against living targets. For any given caliber, some bullet weights have a better track record than others, but it’s only part of the story. Expansion and penetration characteristics are more important than the mere numbers representing bullet weight, velocity, or caliber. Try to find ballistics gelatin tests or real world reports of a specific load’s performance rather than relying too much on bullet weight as a sole indicator of it’s efficacy.

Subsonic/Suppressed:
For optimal performance with a sound suppressor, subsonic ammunition is best. These rounds travel slower than the speed of sound, and create minimal noise when fired through a good suppressor. A few calibers that use heavy bullets, like .45 ACP, are almost always subsonic regardless of bullet choice. Other ammo is only subsonic when used with bullets that are heavy for the caliber. For example, the popular .300 Blackout rifle cartridge makes a loud supersonic crack with a factory 125 grain load, even when a suppressor is used on the gun. To get the “silent but deadly” effect that .300 BLK is known for, it must be fired with the heavier 220 grain bullets which travel at slower subsonic velocities.

Bullet Weight vs. Recoil:
A lot of people intuitively believe there must be some link between bullet weight and recoil. If I want lighter recoil loads for my handgun, I should choose a lighter bullet weight, right?

Not necessarily.

If the lighter bullets were pushed to the same velocity as the heavier bullets then simple physics would dictate that the recoil impulse would be reduced. But as I mentioned earlier, lighter bullets are usually loaded to fly at greater velocities in order to make up for their low mass. In fact, a high velocity light bullet might even have more recoil than a heavier bullet that’s moving slower. Or… the heavier bullet could have more recoil depending on the load. For example, if the cartridge has a fast burning propelllant, the recoil could hit you all at once, translating to a sharp snap against your hand or shoulder. A slow burning powder might distribute the recoil force over a longer period which feels like softer recoil. There is really just no way to determine what recoil is going to feel like by looking at bullet weight alone.

Get Rhythm for Dropping Powder

Powder measures save considerable time over weighing individual doses of “go juice.” Fill a block with primed cases, run each one under the measure, pull the handle and voilà. Finished. But how precise could that be?

Pretty precise, if you get in the rhythm. Many benchrest pros drop their charges. Dropping powder charges is something like dancing. Memorize the steps, get into the rhythm and let ’er flow. One-two-three, one-two-three. Consistent repetition is the key.

Start by filling the hopper. Next, throw half a dozen to a dozen charges and return them to the hopper, easy like. This removes the densely packed lower level, which could contribute to heavier initial loads. Third, weigh individual charges and fine-tune the settings until you’re hitting the desired load weight. Fourth, use the identical handle technique each stroke. Since it’s nigh impossible to pull down and up with the same G forces (especially when cutting long stick powders) each time, minimize these differences by tapping the handle one to three times on the upstroke and downstroke. This should settle the powder evenly each time for consistent charges. To rap the handle, just pull up or down an inch or so and flick the handle against its stop each time, rap, rap, rap. Shoot for the same intensity or energy with each rap. Since no one can do this precisely, we recommend the two or three raps instead of just one. They do a better job of settling grains regardless of lighter or heavier touches.

Try to maintain a fairly consistent powder level in the hopper, say from one-third full to two-thirds full rather than nearly empty to spilling over the top. If static electricity causes granules to stick to sidewalls, wipe the hopper out with a laundry anti-static cloth.

Finally, if you’re really persnickety, weigh every 10th charge or so just to make sure you’re on track. Enjoy the dance.

Improved Cartridges

You hear a lot of talk about “improved” cartridges, which are standard factory cartridges that have been “blown out” and had their shoulders “sharpened” or flattened, usually to 35 or 40 degrees. Headspace usually remains the same but is sometimes reduced to prevent chambering standard loads in an improved chamber for perceived safety factors. If increased significantly, you’re creating a wildcat cartridge, and that’s beyond the scope of this short article.

What’s the point of this? Does it gain anything? How hard is it to do?

Because the cartridge increases in volume, powder capacity increases slightly and so does velocity. My Holland-built .22-250 Improved with 40-degree shoulder burns 1 to 2 grains more powder than a standard .22-250 and churns up 50 to 150 fps more velocity. My .280 Improved bests a standard .280 by 100 to 150 fps with most bullets. Big deal. Some ammunition gains or loses that much shot-to-shot due to inconsistency in loading. You can gain or lose 100 fps with extreme heat or cold. I wouldn’t fall in love with an improved cartridge for its velocity gain. Call it a nice side benefit.

The real benefit seems to be in brass longevity. The sharper shoulder appears to reduce neck stretching and subsequent trimming. You may resize an improved case half as often as a standard, perhaps even less often. All depends on how hot you load ’em and how minimally or maximally you resize them. Some Improved fans claim sharper shoulder angles provide more positive headspacing, though I haven’t had problems with standard cartridges in that regard. Detractors say minimal body taper and sharp shoulders interfere with smooth loading from magazine to chamber. I haven’t noticed that either.

Creating an improved chamber requires reaming it to the new dimensions. Any competent gunsmith should be able to do it for $50 to $100. Then you must buy the appropriate resizing die. Be aware that there may be more than one size of a “given” improved cartridge. The Nosler Reloading Guide #4, for instance, lists dimensions for a .22- 250 Remington Ackley Improved that are 1.524 inches from base to start of shoulder, 1.892 inches total length while the Barnes Reloading Manual #3 depicts a .22-250 Improved that’s 1.539 inches base to start of shoulder, 1.910 total length. Both have 40-degree shoulders. Consult carefully with your gunsmith to match chamber to the die you’ll need to load for it.Making Improved brass is easily done by fireforming. If the new chamber was cut with the same headspace (length from face of locked bolt to shoulder “wall” in the chamber, correlating to base-to shoulder length of the cartridge at the start of the neck), as it should have been, just shoot standard ammunition in the new chamber, i.e. .22-250 in a .22-250 Improved chamber, .25-06 in a .25-06 Improved chamber, .257 Roberts in a .257 Robert’s Improved, etc. Many gunsmiths recommend seating bullets to firmly touch the lands during fireforming as this forces the cartridge base firmly against the bolt face, minimizing case stretch just ahead of the webbing in the base. Target shooters like to seat bullets to touch rifling lands lightly just to center the bullet/cartridge with the bore, believing this creates straighter, more evenly balanced cases. Maybe it does.

After fireforming, check for excessive case stretch with a small wire bent at a 90-degree angle and inserted to the base of the web. Push the angled tip against the inner wall and slide up, feeling for any gaps or grooves, which indicate thinning of the wall. If you detect none, nor any cracks along the shoulder edges or necks, you’ve got a good fireformed case that you may subsequently size, trim and load like any other. Avoid excessive pressure in your handloads and each case should last a long, long time.

Consult with an experienced gunsmith before electing to Improve any rifle. Oh, there’s one more argument for having an Improved: just to be different.
