Making Room to Load

Don’t be discouraged by cramped living conditions. If you have enough room to swivel round a chair, you have enough to handload. A tiny space might not be as convenient as a full room, but handloading equipment can be made to work in surprisingly small areas, including kitchen tables, bathroom counters, even closets.

During a recent visit to Sportsman’s Warehouse in Boise, I saw a wood and metal reloading bench that couldn’t have been more than two feet deep and three feet wide. That’s plenty of space for handloading, but the price of the unit was more than $300. I know that would have been too rich for my wallet back when I was starting out, so if you’re in the same economic boat, don’t despair. You can rig up your own loading bench for almost nothing.

Your biggest concern is a stable platform for a press. Considerable force is put into resizing brass and you need a solid platform to handle it. My solution has always been to add a square of 3/4-inch plywood and 2×4 legs to any substandard shelves or tables I might have. I once ran a Pacific press on a built-in desk of a mobile home, and you know how flimsy those plywood tornado magnets are! All I did was cut a slab of plywood to fit atop and stick out beyond the cheap desktop far enough to accommodate the press, which I reinforced underneath with a frame of 2x4s. All the pressure went down into the 2×4 legs. I piled bullets and bags of shot on the back of the plywood to hold it down. When I moved out, the desk looked good as ever, nary a hole in it.

With just a handsaw, drill and screws you can build a stand-alone platform in the shape of a box. Make it tall enough to work from as you prefer, sitting or standing. Let the top overhang the front or one side far enough so the press handle clears on the downstroke. Reinforce under the press with a horizontal 2×4 and one or two going down as “legs.” Add a series of shelves inside the box and you’ll have neat storage space for bullets, powder, dies, etc. Put rollers on the bottom and you can roll this rig in and out of a closet as needed. Or paint the outside pretty and use as a lamp or knick-knack counter.

Want a closet loading bench? Secure a fold-up plywood top to a back wall with hefty hinges. Hinge 2×4 legs to its front edge. Everything folds up and out of the way until you need to reload. Then just push the shirts and pants out of the way, fold down the shelf, mount the press and get to work.

It’s even possible, though not ideal, to do your handloading outside on a picnic table or rough bench made just for the purpose. You’ll need to store supplies in the house, of course, and break them out each time you load, but it beats sitting and wishing. Build small, wooden platform bases for your press, case trimmer, neck reamer and whatever else you need and clamp them to the picnic table with carpenter’s C clamps. Do your powder loading indoors where nothing will contaminate it and wind won’t mess with your scale. Fill a block of cases, then carry them out to the press for bullet seating.

Garages are natural and commonly used handloading rooms. Just don’t mix loading supplies with mechanic and auto supplies. Oil and powder don’t mix. If space is limited, dedicate a removable plywood counter top just for loading. Place this over your dirty, oily workbench before getting out primers and powders. A slab of Formica covered plywood from one of the home improvement stores makes an easily cleaned, smooth bench surface for reloading. Oh, if your garage gets hot in summer, don’t store primers or powder in it. Keep them someplace dry and cool.

A support for powder measure and scale can be a simple box of shelves designed to place the scale level with your eye. Make it wide enough to remain stable while operating the lever of a powder measure. Lower shelves can be used to store calipers, funnels, primer pocket cleaners, etc. I’ve made a number of these over the years, often out of scrap wood. Hey, it doesn’t have to be pretty. It just has to work.

Don’t worry about the perfect design for a press bench. You can always shore up bad designs with additional 2×4 legs or cross-member supports, even on the “feet” of your table’s legs (if it wants to tip forward on the down stroke, for instance). Get free lumber scraps at any building site. Just ask if you can pick through the scraps and you’ll find enough 2x4s, planks, boards and premature shelving to build nearly anything needed in a reloading room. Don’t be intimidated, don’t be shy, and don’t believe you don’t have the space to set up a handloading corner.

PROPER POWDER STORAGE

Some years ago I read an article by Charles “Skeeter” Skelton, the handgun editor

of Shooting Times magazine. He told a story of how he had loaded up what he called “stout” loads for a friend. The

friend tried to shoot a range bull that was down and needed to be killed. The rounds went “poop” and bounced off the

bull’s skull at point blank range. Skeeter went back and checked his powder measure which had been left with the powder

in it for quite some time prior to cooking up the loads. When he dumped the powder out he found lots of it adhering,

actually melted into the plastic hopper. He realized that the chemical reaction between the powder and the plastic

hopper caused degradation of the powder. He was correct as this is the first reasons you should empty the powder back

into the bottle after a reloading session.

When I first started reloading, I recall reading from loading manuals of the day

that there were a number possible problems from leaving powder in the hopper.

1. Powder attacking the plastic hopper and degrading the powder as in the previous

story. Nitrocellulose powders are extruded thru use of a solvent, Acetone mainly, to soften it and make it plastic for

processing it. Acetone can melt or soften polystyrene plastics. Nitroglycerine-augmented nitrocellulose powders

(double-base) involve even more solvents to introduce the EXTRA nitro into the guncotton.

2. Confusion later as to which powder is in the hopper leading to using the wrong

amount/weight of powder in a load.

3. Powder being adversely affected by UV light (from a window or fluorescent

lights), leading to decomposition or change in burning rate. Powder comes in opaque cans for a reason, powder will

degrade in light over time.

4. Degradation of the powder from exposure to humidity because a hopper will not

seal as well as the powder bottle or jug. Smokeless powder is hydrophilic (it will absorb humidity from the air) and

when it absorbs water, it swells and this will change the burning characteristics of the powder. Only the top half inch

or so will swell like this. This makes any later charges thrown from that powder less powerful than the first charges

thrown from dry powder, but not consistently so. Most basement reloading rooms have higher humidity than any other room

in the house (excepting the bathroom). The manufacturers go to great pains to maintain consistent moisture levels for

every batch they make. For that reason alone you should store your powder in a tightly sealed original can after each

loading session.

I highly recommend using the proper powder storage procedures and as a final point

of emphasis is the following statement found on the Hodgdon’s reloading data website:

“Powder left in the reloader’s powder measure hoppers for extended periods,

overnight or several days, should be avoided. Powder needs to be stored in original containers ONLY, when not in use.

Numerous modern smokeless powders are double base in construction, containing both Nitrocellulose and

Nitroglycerine.”

Gas Checks

Gas Checks, as we know them today, are small precisely made copper cups that fit on the base of the bullet. Gas checks are used when non-jacketed bullets are used in high pressure cartridges. Gas Checks are a method of enhancing the bullet performance by sealing the base of the bullet against gas blow-by and shielding the lead from the high temperatures generated by the gunpowder. The use of a gas check inhibits the buildup of lead in the barrel and improves accuracy. It has been a generally accepted practice to use a Gas Check on bullets above 1,400 fps.

Gas Checks are most commonly found in the form of a thin cup or disc made of a ductile metal. Copper, zinc, aluminum, and alloys such as brass have been used. A bullet designed to accept a Gas Check has a rebated base shank which permits attachment of the check without altering the maximum diameter of the bullet. The shallow cup-shaped check is mechanically attached to the reduced shank of the bullet by swaging.

High pressures, such as those commonly encountered in maximum loads of magnum revolver cartridges or rifle cartridges, often result in significant problems when coupled with cast or swaged lead bullets. It was long thought that the high temperatures melted the base of the bullet, but this is no longer thought to be the case. Instead, the high pressures allow propellant gas to escape past the bullet, causing gas cutting, which increases lead deposits in the barrel and unbalances the bullet. A Gas Check provides a thin layer of harder but still malleable metal on the base of the bullet that obturates to provide a seal and prevents the propellant gas leakage that causes gas cutting, and help the bullet grip the rifling.

APP Automatic Processing Press

Introducing the Lee Automatic Processing Press the APP, the fastest and easiest way to prepare cases and size cast bullets. It is also a very convenient single station reloading press.

Lee received the patent on this new press late last year. It is the first press of its kind with the ability to mount the die to the top or bottom of the press. This die mounting flexibility allows previously unheard of automation on a single station press. Now you can deprime, primer pocket swage, bulge bust or size cast bullets as fast as you can operate the lever.

The press is actually heavy for its compact size. It is manufactured from a variety of materials best suited for the application. The lever or handles are made of steel and are topped with a molded grip we call the power grip. We went through a lot of iterations to come up with a really comfortable design. The grip is completely symmetrical making either hand operation a delight. The upper and lower die carriers are aluminum and the low stress items are nylon or acetal copolymer. The upper carrier rides on two centerless ground and roller burnished columns. The upper die carrier is counter balanced by a centrally mounted coil spring. The counter balance prevents the handle from falling and pinching a finger.

The APP is a “frameless” design with nearly all the forces going directly to the dies through the steel linkages rather than through the frame. As a single stage reloading press, it has almost unlimited visibility and hand clearance. Mounting is easy on any bench or table with no under swing.

Dirty, gritty, lead contaminated spent primers are 100% captured in a screw top bottle. 

The top carrier and base are machined to accept Lee Breech Lock bushings,so they will accept standard 7/8-14 dies of any manufacturer. The APP also uses standard press shell holders from most manufacturers. Includes one Spline drive breech lock bushing and universal type shell holder quick-change adapter.

A little over three inches of stroke allows sizing of the larger belted magnum cartridges. Priced less than nearly all single station presses makes it a perfect starter press or a perfect companion press to an expensive progressive.

But the APP is so much more. With the Automation package, the APP becomes the world’s fastest single stage press. Now you can deprime cases, size cast bullets, swage primer pockets, etc. as fast as you can cycle the lever!

The Automation package includes a revolutionary new kind of case and bullet feeder. Jaws automatically open and grasp the bullet or case. They then rapidly position the case or bullet into the operating position. Once in position, the jaws instantly open and return for the next case or bullet. It is fascinating just cycling the press empty watching the jaws open and close as it cycles back and forth.

The APP gets its speedy operation in part by the use of a new shell holder. We call it the X-press shell holder. The new shell holder allows the case to pass through the shell holder after the operations are performed.  

The Automation package is complete with all the feed tubes, tube supports, risers and case slider. It even includes the 22-caliber bullet feed jaws.

The APP press works with some exclusive new products, like our new primer pocket swager. The new swager removes military primer pocket crimps automatically and as fast as you can operate the lever. Available in small and large pocket size.

The New Breech lock bullet sizer kit allows nose first bullet sizing, change size with an inexpensive punch and die. Nose first bullet sizing is the most accurate, distortion free and because you are pushing on the base of the bullet no special nose punches are required.  On the APP press, bullets are sized as rapidly as you can operate the press lever. The sized bullets drop into an attached wide mouth container. This is the perfect tool for the now popular powder coated bullets.

There is no question that the brass you select is among the most important items in your reloading supplies. For those of you who are new to the world of reloading, “brass” refers to the cartridge case in which you load your primer, powder, and projectile. Choosing the perfect brass is one of the more challenging steps when getting started in reloading, as finding a brass you really like often comes down to trial and error.

If you are reloading just for “plinking” or varmint hunting, the brass you select only needs to be carefully inspected for cracks, bulges or any other signs of pressure damage that has weakened the case. If you are a bench rest shooter desiring the most consistently accurate ammo possible you need to adhere to a few more considerations in your brass selection. Here are a few quick tips that will help you find the best brass for your intended use:

Staying Safe

Brass cartridges are not designed for infinite firings and will eventually fail, so it’s best to only work with those cartridges for which you have a known firing history. Brass rarely suffers catastrophic failure but even small problems can cause complications in your firearm. Thus, it is highly recommended that you only reload new brass you have fired yourself or brass that is reputably known to be “once fired”.

Types Of Retail Brass

Retail brass comes in three main types:
• Military brass
• Bulk brass from big makers
• Premium brass from high-end makers

All of these types offer certain benefits, but also have their own limitations. One of the deciding factors to consider is which you would rather spend – your money or your time?

Military Cases

Military brass is typically made out of good-quality materials to uniform specs. It’s often relatively inexpensive, especially the once-fired variety. This makes it ideal for reloaders who shoot high volumes of ammo. While you can save money by choosing once-fired military brass, it will cost you more time, especially if you intend to prep it for high-accuracy applications. Brand new military brass is out there but costs more and due to current shortages might be more difficult to find than it once was.

Military brass often has a crimp in the primer pocket. You’ll have to remove the crimp prior to resizing. Another concern with military brass is that it may have been fired in anything from a match rifle with a tight chamber, to a machine gun with a long chamber. When prepping once-fired military brass for high accuracy applications, make sure you use a full length sizing die so it resizes the base of the case.

Bulk Commercial Cases

Bulk commercial brass like Federal, Remington and Winchester is available. It’s often priced in the middle range and it’s made to uniform specs that offers consistent primer pockets that don’t have to be swaged, which saves you prep time over once-fired military brass. Bulk commercial brass should be full length sized, trimmed and chamfered prior to loading as it’s not quite perfect.

Premium Cases

Premium brass from makers like Lapua, Norma and Nosler  costs a bit more. Premium brass is made out of high quality alloy to demanding specs and is almost always carefully annealed, which makes the case stand up to repeated firings and saves you money in the long run. Lapua brass is made to strict tolerances in concentricity and wall thickness. Norma brass is known for its very consistent wall thickness and drilled, not punched, flash holes that help ignition. Nosler brass comes with the necks already sized and the case mouth chamfered both inside and outside.

Weighing Your Brass

No matter what kind of brass you choose one step that is key to getting high accuracy is to sort the brass by weight. Many folks like to sort their brass before prepping, but it might be better to sort it after prepping, especially for high-accuracy applications. A good practice is to use cases that weigh within plus or minus .2 or .3 grains of each other. A high-quality scale is critical to sorting brass by weight. This is a must with military or bulk commercial cases. Even premium brass should be weighed and sorted as it’s very common to have 10 out of 100 cases outside that critical weight range.

Conclusion

Like any other complex process, it’s important to begin reloading with your final goal in mind. Do you want to make lots of ammo for plinking or varmint hunting, or are you trying to win a bench rest match? Once you know the goal, it’s easier to decide what type of cartridge case will best help you achieve it. Knowing the benefits and limitations of each type will help you make properly informed choices.

Shot Shell Buckled Cases

Wrinkled or buckled shells usually means that there is too much compression in the shell. Try applying more wad seating pressure, use slightly less shot, use a denser powder (a powder that uses a smaller bushing for the same dram equivalent) or a shorter wad.

Kink During Last Crimp

If you are finding that your shells are coming out kinked during the last crimping station, you may be applying more pressure than necessary for this operation. If you are sure this is not the case, then put some Vaseline on your finger and spread it around throughout the inner diameter of that die. This remedy was suggested by a customer, and while we are not completely sure why it works, it certainly seems to.

Another possibility lies in the weather. It seems that the colder it is at the loading location, the better the chance a case will kink on final crimp. This is possibly due to the plastic case being less pliable.

Rippled and Crushed Cases

While there can be many reasons for a case to be rippled or crushed in the reloading process, there are primarily two.

The first is that the bullet seating die is not set properly. If the crimp shoulder is set too deeply, the case is crimped before the bottom of the press stroke is achieved. Once the bullet is seated, additional pressure pushes the already heavily crimped case into the die further resulting in a crushed case. This is a common occurrence with thin and long case necks such as the 30-30 Winchester.

The trick is to set the bullet seating depth first, then the crimp. This is done as follows; With an empty, sized case in the shell holder, hold the ram at the top of its stroke. Turn the bullet seating die body down over the case until you feel it come to a stop. This will be when the case mouth contacts the crimp shoulder inside the die. Mark this position by turning the lock ring down against the turret or press frame. Now adjust your bullet seating depth. Once you have the bullet seated to the desired depth, back the bullet seater adjuster out about 1 turn. Now turn the bullet seating die body in to apply the desired crimp. Once this is established, hold the ram at the top of its stroke and spin the bullet seater adjuster down until it stops.

It is a good idea to carry this out with an empty case, so that after you have seated the bullet, you have a perfectly safe “dummy” cartridge (or gauge) to repetitively set seating depth and crimp on future occasions. Once you have this “dummy” gauge, all you have to do is place it in the shell holder, raise the ram to the top of its stroke, turn the bullet seating body down until it stops, and then turn the bullet seating depth adjuster in until it stops. Since the crimp and the seating depth were already set, the die will return to very close to the same settings.

The second reason is generally associated with the collet dies. If the collet in the die has been collapsed, the case neck can not clearly enter the collet area. This results in a crushed and / or buckled case. This can be avoided by not operating the die without a case in it. If this happens, it is necessary to remove the collet and pry the collet leaves back so that they stay apart when inserted back into the die. The ID of the die body will cause the leaves to stay uniformly apart.

Selecting The Right Die Set For Your Needs

For Rifle:

Lee Pacesetter Dies and RGB series: Use these dies if you want to produce factory-dimensioned ammo that reliably fits and feeds in any gun. They are the first choice for semi-auto actions. Full-length sizing is a must if you are reloading for more than one firearm or reloading cases that were fired in others firearms. Most Pacesetter dies include the Lee Factory Crimp Die.

The Lee Collet Neck Sizing Dies: Use these dies for best accuracy, longest case life and no resizing lubricant. Only the neck of the case is resized the body is untouched so it retains the perfect fit to your guns chamber. Cases should have been fired in your firearm only and reloaded rounds are intended for use in just one firearm. These dies are the favorite of the bench rest crowd as there is no other die that can produce a more accurate cartridge.

If you intend to reload cases fired in others guns or you are reloading for more than one gun select the Ultimate Rifle Die Set. The Ultimate set includes a full length resizing die that allows you to restore any case to factory original dimensions so that you can fire form in your gun and then reload using the superior Collet neck sizing die.

For Pistol:

Most Lee Handgun Dies feature a Carbide Sizing Die. Carbide dies are simply the best way to resize straight walled handgun cartridges.

The Carbide Three Die Set works fine when using a quality controlled source of brass like cases fired only in your gun. More care is required when adjusting the bullet seat and crimp die as seating and crimping occur simultaneously.

Select the Carbide Deluxe Four Die Set when using mixed range brass or brass that was fired in others guns. The Deluxe Set includes the Carbide Factory Crimp Die along with the Carbide Three Die Set. This die allows you to separate bullet seating from the crimping operation. This month I want to share our back yard with all of you. It has been an on going project for quite a few years as we did the work ourselves. I call it “Robin’s Creation”. Powder Coated Bullets

Powder coating cast bullets has become increasingly popular over the past couple of years.  Traditionally, powder coating is a method of applying a powdered paint to metal using heat.  With reloading, it serves as an alternative to the traditional lube for lead cast bullets that has a number of benefits.

Advantages:

• reduces or eliminates lead left behind in the barrel.
• not as smokey as traditional lubes.
• increased velocities

When reloading powder coated bullets there are a few things to keep in mind.  The powder coating is not as strong as a copper jacket. The powder coating can be scrapped off while seating the bullets, so flare the brass a bit more generously.  The powder coating will also not resist a crimp like a copper jacket, so keep that in mind as well.  Lastly, it is good practice to use lead load data for the powder coated bullets.

If you are looking to get into casting bullets, or just looking for bullets to shoot with the jacketed options drying up, powder coated bullets are a great option.

Interchangeable Dies

Frequently, dies from one caliber may be used to load other calibers. Due to the locations of crimping shoulders, the operation may only work for dies of the shorter caliber to the longer. You may notice a label depicting the shorter die in your set for the longer version of the cartridge, Lee does this to reduce costs.

As an example, to load .357 Magnum cartridges with .38 dies, the Sizing Die (1st die) setting stays the same as the .38. The Powder Through Expanding Die (2nd die) and the Bullet Seating Die (3rd die) must be backed out approximately 2 turns in the turret. This is the difference in length from the .38 to the .357 Magnum. This setting must be tweeked in as 2 turn is approximate.

Even though some dies are interchangable, in many cases, different shell holders are necessary. You can see a complete list of shellholders under “Case Preparation” then “Shell holders and Calibers”.

**Lee dies allow the use of .308 bullets in the 32 H&R Magnum. The other bullet diameter commonly used is .311 and that is the expander that comes with the set. To use .308 bullets, it is necessary to purchase an additional expander and turn it down to .308. Well, Fall is officially here. The kids are back in school, the days are getting shorter and yes, the leaves are beginning to change colors. Shot Shell Crimp Problems

Crimp problems are usually caused by not having the correct wad length for the shell and components selected. If the crimp is too deep use a longer wad. If none are available, you can use a wad that is too short and use a fiber or a cardboard wad from a smaller gauge to take up the excess space. It is usually best to place this directly below the shot. Even a crumbled scrap of paper will do.

Sometimes a wad slightly long can be compressed in the wad starting station. Do this by moving the wad starter up 1/4 inch (for 3″ shells). Then use a 1/4 inch spacer under the shell. The spacer should have a hole in the center so nothing will touch the primer. A few washers work fine. This will then permit the wad to be seated deeper.

Poorly formed crimps can be caused by using the wrong crimp starter, 6 or 8 segment, or starting in the wrong place. Be sure to align exactly on the fold. With some brands of shells a better crimp is formed by starting exactly in the wrong place. That is where the shell previously folded out, recrimp with the fold in.
