Useful Tid-bits

Why does load data listed in various manufacturers’ loading manuals differ when loading the same cartridge?

The size of the specific firearm chamber, throat dimensions, seating depth, bullet profile, propellant variances and crimping depth can all contribute to variations in load data. For example, the data found in the Hornady loading manual represents actual results derived in the Hornady Ballistics Laboratory. Manufacturers recommend that reloaders always start with the “starting load” and work up cautiously until they achieve the performance they’re looking for. If pressure signs become evident, stop immediately and reduce the load or try another propellant.

What would the velocity of your ammunition be if using a shorter barrel?

Exact velocities can’t be calculated because variables associated with individual chambers and/or barrels affect velocity, but on average, velocity gains or losses will be approximately 25 to 35 feet per second per inch of barrel difference. That doesn’t hold true for every load or every gun. To truly measure performance, the load should be tested over a chronograph.

Why does velocity differ from what’s listed on the ammo box?

In order to comply with industry standards, manufacturers publish data for ammunition derived from testing with Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers Institute (SAAMI) specification test barrels. SAAMI specifies minimum and maximum chamber sizes and certain barrel lengths for certain cartridges. For instance, most rifle test barrels are 24 inches long. Due to variables associated with individual firearm chambers and/or barrels, velocities may be faster or slower than those published in the manuals.

Bullet Weights Not Found In Manuals

If the bullet weight you wish to load is not found in your favorite manual, it is safe to use loads listed for a heavier weight bullet and find a load for the powder you have. Using that load with the lighter bullet simply reduces the pressure, and the velocity remains approximately the same.

Velocity Of Lead Bullets

A good rule of thumb for maximum velocities when using liquid alox is 1400 feet per second for plain base bullets and 2200 feet per second when using gas check bullets. Bore conditions will require you increase or decrease this velocity slightly to prevent leading.

Safety Prime drops primers on ground

If you have the light gray version of the Safety Prime tool and are experiencing issues with consistently placing primers in the cup, you may need to adjust the small or large slider inside your trigger housing:

1) Open up trigger assembly by depressing a pen tip to release cover.

2) Open up cover on trigger and slide out the cover and slider.

3) Remove slider from cover and place around a 1/4″ bolt. Put inside a cup of boiling water for 5 minutes.

4) Re-install slider into trigger assembly and snap on the cover.

PROPER POWDER STORAGE

Some years ago I read an article by Charles “Skeeter” Skelton, the handgun editor of Shooting Times magazine. He told a story of how he had loaded up what he called “stout” loads for a friend. The friend tried to shoot a range bull that was down and needed to be killed. The rounds went “poop” and bounced off the bull’s skull at point blank range. Skeeter went back and checked his powder measure which had been left with the powder in it for quite some time prior to cooking up the loads. When he dumped the powder out he found lots of it adhering, actually melted into the plastic hopper. He realized that the chemical reaction between the powder and the plastic hopper caused degradation of the powder. He was correct as this is the first reasons you should empty the powder back into the bottle after a reloading session. When I first started reloading, I recall reading from loading manuals of the day that there were a number possible problems from leaving powder in the hopper.

1. Powder attacking the plastic hopper and degrading the powder as in the previous story. Nitrocellulose powders are extruded thru use of a solvent, Acetone mainly, to soften it and make it plastic for processing it. Acetone can melt or soften polystyrene plastics. Nitroglycerine-augmented nitrocellulose powders (double-base) involve even more solvents to introduce the EXTRA nitro into the guncotton.

2. Confusion later as to which powder is in the hopper leading to using the wrong amount/weight of powder in a load.

3. Powder being adversely affected by UV light (from a window or fluorescent lights), leading to decomposition or change in burning rate. Powder comes in opaque cans for a reason, powder will degrade in light over time.

4. Degradation of the powder from exposure to humidity because a hopper will not seal as well as the powder bottle or jug. Smokeless powder is hydrophilic (it will absorb humidity from the air) and when it absorbs water, it swells and this will change the burning characteristics of the powder. Only the top half inch or so will swell like this. This makes any later charges thrown from that powder less powerful than the first charges thrown from dry powder, but not consistently so. Most basement reloading rooms have higher humidity than any other room in the house (excepting the bathroom). The manufacturers go to great pains to maintain consistent moisture levels for every batch they make. For that reason alone you should store your powder in a tightly sealed original can after each loading session.

I highly recommend using the proper powder storage procedures and as a final point of emphasis is the following statement found on the Hodgdon’s reloading data website: “Powder left in the reloader’s powder measure hoppers for extended periods, overnight or several days, should be avoided. Powder needs to be stored in original containers ONLY, when not in use. Numerous modern smokeless powders are double base in construction, containing both Nitrocellulose and Nitroglycerine.”

We have some exciting news for August, but along with this will be Service Interruptions.

On Thursday, August 5th at 8 AM CST we will be changing to a new website. During this transfer we will be ‘Under Maintenance Mode’ and not accepting orders. We will be getting this done asap but it may be two days for the amount of work to be done.

In the end of August we are getting a new parking lot. The Showroom will be Closed from Aug. 29, 2021 to Sept.6, 2021. Due to lack of access to the Store, we will be going on vacation. Lee Turret Press Indexing Explained

The square ratchet is both free to rotate inside the clamp and held fast by the clamp, depending on which direction the ram is moving.  If you are lowering the press lever (raising the ram) you don’t want the turret to rotate, so the square ratchet must be free to rotate inside the clamp.  The friction between the square ratchet and the index rod causes the square ratchet to slide down to the bottom of the cavity inside the clamp, where it is free to rotate when it passes over the twist in the index rod.  On the upswing of the press lever (as the ram goes down) the drag between the square ratchet and index rod causes the square ratchet to slide up to the top of the cavity inside the clamp, where the square ratchet fits into matching notches in the clamp which prevent the square ratchet from turning, so as it passes the twist in the index rod it turns the turret.

Included with the Deluxe and Classic Turret Presses is a spare black nylon ratchet. This installs inside the black auto index clamp on the steel ram. The square black ratchet rides on the 1/4″x 1/4″ steel index rod. When removing the aluminum turret, be sure to raise the ram to disengage the square ratchet from the twisted part of the rod.

The nylon square ratchet that comes with the turret press is designed to properly index the press for 10s of thousands of rounds; however, an extra does comes with the press. This inexpensive part is made of nylon for two reasons with the first being that if the index rod is operated against the proper rotation, the nylon will fail before any damage occurs to any other part. The second is that they are inexpensive to produce and purchase.

The ratchet enables the indexing without “tweaking” or adjustment. The index rod may be removed and replaced at will without affecting the timing of the press. In the unlikely event that your press was received and not indexing correctly, the ratchet is not the reason and the issue is easily resolved by turret press index alignment.

The only reason the ratchet would be damaged is from forcing the index rod against that ratchet. This generally occurs when turrets are removed with the ram at the bottom of the stroke as the ratchet is engaged during the down stroke. When removing turrets, it is necessary to raise the ram about an inch or so.

A problem can ultimately affect indexing if the ratchet is excessively forced against the index rod, because the top portion of the ram, designed to rotate for another reason, would do so under these circumstances. Then, even with the ratchet replaced, the entire housing is off center. The proper alignment of the housing is completed by using the lever portion of the priming arm and aligning it with the two bumps on the base of the press

The nylon housing that holds the ratchet never needs to be opened other than to eventually replace the nylon ratchet. Remove the index rod, then the housing by removing the horizontal screw. Replace the ratchet remembering to place the flange in the downward position and reattach the nylon housing. This housing does nothing more than contain the ratchet. Do not over tighten the screw because the threads can be stripped.

Take a moment to consider the spirit of our Founding Documents and what is happening to our freedoms as we redefine the meanings. The strength of our country comes from the self reliant individuals who are a part of a larger cause, not in the notion of a collective society were those who do not pursue happiness are still entitled to it. Our Constitution guarantees our opportunities….not our outcomes. This principle is being called Systemic Racism by some today but it seems more like just plain Common Sense. We must teach this spirit to our children lest they only hear the redefined versions of responsibility so popular in educational circles today.

Celebrate and Reflect on the fact that we are the “last bastion of freedom on earth”. For this reason we must not focus on our differences, but rather, join together and preserve the USA as our founders designed it. Our freedoms are not free and will be lost if good people do nothing to uphold it. Teach our youth about the country we grew up in. This is no longer a part of schools curriculum, having been replaced by diversity. Our kids know very little about the freedoms we take for granted. We must ALL teach them.

Brass Selection

There is no question that the brass you select is among the most important items in your reloading supplies. For those of you who are new to the world of reloading, “brass” refers to the cartridge case in which you load your primer, powder, and projectile. Choosing the perfect brass is one of the more challenging steps when getting started in reloading, as finding a brass you really like often comes down to trial and error.

If you are reloading just for “plinking” or varmint hunting, the brass you select only needs to be carefully inspected for cracks, bulges or any other signs of pressure damage that has weakened the case. If you are a bench rest shooter desiring the most consistently accurate ammo possible you need to adhere to a few more considerations in your brass selection. Here are a few quick tips that will help you find the best brass for your intended use:

Staying Safe

Brass cartridges are not designed for infinite firings and will eventually fail, so it’s best to only work with those cartridges for which you have a known firing history. Brass rarely suffers catastrophic failure but even small problems can cause complications in your firearm. Thus, it is highly recommended that you only reload new brass you have fired yourself or brass that is reputably known to be “once fired”.

Types Of Retail Brass

Retail brass comes in three main types:
• Military brass
• Bulk brass from big makers
• Premium brass from high-end makers

All of these types offer certain benefits, but also have their own limitations. One of the deciding factors to consider is which you would rather spend – your money or your time?

Military Cases

Military brass is typically made out of good-quality materials to uniform specs. It’s often relatively inexpensive, especially the once-fired variety. This makes it ideal for reloaders who shoot high volumes of ammo. While you can save money by choosing once-fired military brass, it will cost you more time, especially if you intend to prep it for high-accuracy applications. Brand new military brass is out there but costs more and due to current shortages might be more difficult to find than it once was.

Military brass often has a crimp in the primer pocket. You’ll have to remove the crimp prior to resizing. Another concern with military brass is that it may have been fired in anything from a match rifle with a tight chamber, to a machine gun with a long chamber. When prepping once-fired military brass for high accuracy applications, make sure you use a full length sizing die so it resizes the base of the case.

Bulk Commercial Cases

Bulk commercial brass like Federal, Remington and Winchester is available. It’s often priced in the middle range and it’s made to uniform specs that offers consistent primer pockets that don’t have to be swaged, which saves you prep time over once-fired military brass. Bulk commercial brass should be full length sized, trimmed and chamfered prior to loading as it’s not quite perfect.

Premium Cases

Premium brass from makers like Lapua, Norma and Nosler  costs a bit more. Premium brass is made out of high quality alloy to demanding specs and is almost always carefully annealed, which makes the case stand up to repeated firings and saves you money in the long run. Lapua brass is made to strict tolerances in concentricity and wall thickness. Norma brass is known for its very consistent wall thickness and drilled, not punched, flash holes that help ignition. Nosler brass comes with the necks already sized and the case mouth chamfered both inside and outside.

Weighing Your Brass

No matter what kind of brass you choose one step that is key to getting high accuracy is to sort the brass by weight. Many folks like to sort their brass before prepping, but it might be better to sort it after prepping, especially for high-accuracy applications. A good practice is to use cases that weigh within plus or minus .2 or .3 grains of each other. A high-quality scale is critical to sorting brass by weight. This is a must with military or bulk commercial cases. Even premium brass should be weighed and sorted as it’s very common to have 10 out of 100 cases outside that critical weight range.

Conclusion

Like any other complex process, it’s important to begin reloading with your final goal in mind. Do you want to make lots of ammo for plinking or varmint hunting, or are you trying to win a bench rest match? Once you know the goal, it’s easier to decide what type of cartridge case will best help you achieve it. Knowing the benefits and limitations of each type will help you make properly informed choices.

Converting the Lee ACP to an APP Press

The Lee ACP priming tool shares many components from the Lee APP press. However, it may be more economical to purchase an App from one of our dealers vs. purchasing the parts required to make the conversion. 

If you are interested in what is involved with a conversion here are the steps required:

The ACP Priming tool rides on smaller columns that are wider spaced to accommodate the primer trough. The upper carrier has a substantial relief cut machined to allow primer trough clearance and the connecting links web is slotted for primer trough clearance.

It is possible to convert the ACP to be used like the APP press. Because primer pocket swaging requires so much pressure, we don’t recommend you use the ACP press for this operation.

To use the ACP press for other APP press operations, you will have to do some disassembly and purchase at least the shell holder adapter product # 91631.

You must remove the primer trough assembly by removing two 4-40 pan head screws. Remove the push/guide die, guide fingers and extractor. If your planning to size bullets you’ll also need to order the “B” tube support part # PA4360, and small bullet feed tube product # BF3489. If you are sizing bullets smaller than .25 caliber you will also need the 22 cal fingers part # PA4988.

This month I would like to point out a few features on our website that will help you navigate quickly to the products you’re looking for and also calculate the shipping costs for an order.

The first feature is the “Search” engine located on the upper right corner of the website. With this tool you can search for a Lee part number which will result in the item’s listing appearing below the “Search Criteria” for selection. Click on the listing picture to go directly to the listing for ordering. If you are not sure what the part number is you can also search by item name (i.e. powder funnel, dies etc.) and then scroll through the items that appear on the lower portion of the page for selection. When you search for an item name everything related to that product will appear. A great way to narrow down the results is to type in a caliber (i.e. 223, 30/06, 45 ACP etc.) which will produce all the items related to the caliber. Be sure to select “All Categories” in the field below “Keywords” so the whole website will be searched.

The second feature is the “Site Map” located at the bottom of the “Information” area on the left side of the website. The Site Map shows the category structure of our website on one page and allows you to go directly to any category on the site with one click of the mouse. Most of the RED text on our website (except page titles) are actually links that when “Clicked On” go directly to the subject of the text.

The third feature is the “Shipping Estimator” located on the right side of the website below the “Search” and “Shopping Cart”. Add all the items you want to order into the shopping cart and then, rather than going to checkout, select your Country, State/Region and Postal Code in the shipping estimator and click “Estimate”. This will return the cost of shipping and the results are displayed directly below the Shipping Estimator. Depending on the size of your screen, you may have to scroll down to see these results. If you are logged into your account you must clear the shopping cart if you choose not to order. If you are not logged into an account you can simply abandon the shopping cart and all will be cleared.

The final feature is for the many friends we have made all over the world. Located directly below the Shipping Estimator on the right side of the website is a “Translator”. With this tool you can select from many languages and convert the entire website to that language.

Lee Safety Prime Small and Large Primer Feeder

Makes priming on the press a delight. Never touch the primers from box to shell. Primer flip tray features a CAD designed flipping surface that instantly rights the primers. Change primer size in seconds. Primers are dispensed with a satisfying click of the primer feed trigger. Use any brand of primers because the priming operation is remote from the feeder. Works on all presses 2006 and later that have the Lever Prime System (LPS).

Lee Safety Prime 90997 is a new priming system for both small and large primers, never touch the primers from box to shell.  Used with 2006 and newer Breech Lock Challenger Presses, Turret Presses, the Classic Cast Turret Press and the Classic Cast Press.

NOTE: Lee Auto-Disk Powder Measure Riser (sold separately) is required for installation of this Safety Prime on all Turret Presses.

The Load Master Indexing Adjustment

There are two common causes for the Load Master to not index correctly. The easiest to check is the case ejector. This is a chrome plated part just under the black knurled nut that holds down the shell plate. There is a “tail” on the case ejector that prevents the shell plate from turning clockwise as the indexer is pulled out of the shell plate carrier. Make sure the end of this tail is bent down so that it drops into the holes in the top of the shell plate (if it doesn’t, bend it with a needle nose pliers). It is important that when placed onto the square fitting on the carrier, that the case ejector not be able to move at all in a rotary manner. If it does, this would allow the shell plate to move in a clockwise manner which will cause index problems.

The other is carrier misalignment. Sometimes a difficult index causes the whole shell plate carrier to rotate on the end of the ram, rather than just the shell plate. This pulls the indexer away from the ramps cast into the frame that normally operate the indexer. The fix is outlined on the last page of the instructions, under “Alignment of the Carrier to the Turret”. Basically what you are doing is loosening the carrier on the ram so that you can turn it clockwise (looking down from the top of the press) a degree or so, to bring the indexer closer to the frame.

While the directions contain more detail, loosen the draw bolt on the bottom of the ram of the press until the carrier is loose. Raise the ram to a point that the round portion of the flipper on the end of the index rod is against the protruded rib on the frame of the press. Ensure that the index rod is in towards the carrier as far as it will go.

From the front facing the press, pull slightly on the case feed ramp so that the round part of the flipper on the index rod is flush with protruding rib on the press frame. Holding the carrier in place, re-tighten the draw bolt to about twelve pounds of pressure. This means using about twelve pounds of pressure at the end of the handle of a one foot socket wrench or about twenty five pounds with a six inch socket wrench. It is important to hold the carrier tightly in place while tightening the draw bolt, if not done, the carrier will move counter-clockwise under the torque of tightening the draw bolt.

INSIGHT OF THE MONTH:

Cartridge Overall Length (O.A.L.) Determined

The overall length (o.a.l.) listed on the drawings in Lee’s Modern Reloading is the SAAMI (Small Arms Ammunition Manufacturers Institute) specification.  Most of the load data in the book was supplied to Lee by the powder manufactures. One can exceed the recommended maximum overall length as long as it doesn’t interfere with the function of the rifle.  If your rifle will not accept ammunition loaded to a longer o.a.l. choose a different bullet/powder combination.

There are many tools on the market to determine the “free bore” of your particular rifle.  This is the distance from the face of the bolt to the lands of the barrel.  A handy way to determine this without such equipment is to use a fine marking pencil and a cleaning rod.  Use something to make the internal portion of the threads of the cleaning rod blunt so that a tip of a bullet cannot go into the concave portion.  Even a piece of Duct tape will suffice temporarily.  With the bolt out of the gun and the bullet you intend to use placed and held up against the lands and grooves of the barrel, place your cleaning rod in from the muzzle until you feel it stop against the tip of the bullet.  Mark this spot on the cleaning rod from the muzzle end.  Remove the bullet and repeat the procedure with the bolt in and closed.  The distance between the two marks will be a close indicator of the maximum Cartridge Overall Length for that particular bullet.

There are tools available that are more accurate but I have used the above method for years to get very close to where I needed to be.

Don’t be discouraged by cramped living conditions. If you have enough room to swivel round a chair, you have enough to handload. A tiny space might not be as convenient as a full room, but handloading equipment can be made to work in surprisingly small areas, including kitchen tables, bathroom counters, even closets.

During a recent visit to Sportsman’s Warehouse in Boise, I saw a wood and metal reloading bench that couldn’t have been more than two feet deep and three feet wide. That’s plenty of space for handloading, but the price of the unit was more than $300. I know that would have been too rich for my wallet back when I was starting out, so if you’re in the same economic boat, don’t despair. You can rig up your own loading bench for almost nothing.

Your biggest concern is a stable platform for a press. Considerable force is put into resizing brass and you need a solid platform to handle it. My solution has always been to add a square of 3/4-inch plywood and 2×4 legs to any substandard shelves or tables I might have. I once ran a Pacific press on a built-in desk of a mobile home, and you know how flimsy those plywood tornado magnets are! All I did was cut a slab of plywood to fit atop and stick out beyond the cheap desktop far enough to accommodate the press, which I reinforced underneath with a frame of 2x4s. All the pressure went down into the 2×4 legs. I piled bullets and bags of shot on the back of the plywood to hold it down. When I moved out, the desk looked good as ever, nary a hole in it.

With just a handsaw, drill and screws you can build a stand-alone platform in the shape of a box. Make it tall enough to work from as you prefer, sitting or standing. Let the top overhang the front or one side far enough so the press handle clears on the downstroke. Reinforce under the press with a horizontal 2×4 and one or two going down as “legs.” Add a series of shelves inside the box and you’ll have neat storage space for bullets, powder, dies, etc. Put rollers on the bottom and you can roll this rig in and out of a closet as needed. Or paint the outside pretty and use as a lamp or knick-knack counter.

Want a closet loading bench? Secure a fold-up plywood top to a back wall with hefty hinges. Hinge 2×4 legs to its front edge. Everything folds up and out of the way until you need to reload. Then just push the shirts and pants out of the way, fold down the shelf, mount the press and get to work.

It’s even possible, though not ideal, to do your handloading outside on a picnic table or rough bench made just for the purpose. You’ll need to store supplies in the house, of course, and break them out each time you load, but it beats sitting and wishing. Build small, wooden platform bases for your press, case trimmer, neck reamer and whatever else you need and clamp them to the picnic table with carpenter’s C clamps. Do your powder loading indoors where nothing will contaminate it and wind won’t mess with your scale. Fill a block of cases, then carry them out to the press for bullet seating.

Garages are natural and commonly used handloading rooms. Just don’t mix loading supplies with mechanic and auto supplies. Oil and powder don’t mix. If space is limited, dedicate a removable plywood counter top just for loading. Place this over your dirty, oily workbench before getting out primers and powders. A slab of Formica covered plywood from one of the home improvement stores makes an easily cleaned, smooth bench surface for reloading. Oh, if your garage gets hot in summer, don’t store primers or powder in it. Keep them someplace dry and cool.

A support for powder measure and scale can be a simple box of shelves designed to place the scale level with your eye. Make it wide enough to remain stable while operating the lever of a powder measure. Lower shelves can be used to store calipers, funnels, primer pocket cleaners, etc. I’ve made a number of these over the years, often out of scrap wood. Hey, it doesn’t have to be pretty. It just has to work.

Don’t worry about the perfect design for a press bench. You can always shore up bad designs with additional 2×4 legs or cross-member supports, even on the “feet” of your table’s legs (if it wants to tip forward on the down stroke, for instance). Get free lumber scraps at any building site. Just ask if you can pick through the scraps and you’ll find enough 2x4s, planks, boards and premature shelving to build nearly anything needed in a reloading room. Don’t be intimidated, don’t be shy, and don’t believe you don’t have the space to set up a handloading corner.
